It is all metal threaded to fit common bolts.

Can the flip-screen on camera be flipped up all the way up without cage interfering?

Yes. The top of the cage is narrower than the bottom by about 3/8 inch. This allows the screen to open fully.

Will an a5100 camera with this cage still be able to mount to a la-ea4?

Yes, your lens adaptor should clear because the cage does not extend on the front out past the camera mounting plate. If anything, it should help due to the cage lifting the camera up and providing tripod mounting surface holes about 10 mm below the original camera base--thereby giving more distance for an adaptor plate or lens that extends below the original camera lens attachment.
