Belkin N1 Wireless Router

It does as advertised. Compared to my previous d-link b/g wireless router: Consistently up, I can make wireless connections with my existing components much faster, and it seems to be more compatible. For a rather technical home electronics component, it has a ridiculously simple setup and troubleshooting process - far better than anything I've seen in this class before - so if you aren't a techie, then this is a good wireless router for you. I'm not using the "N" band, however the range for "G" is fairy good as well (better than my previous router). Though mercifully I haven't had to test it out yet, Belkin is one of the few (perhaps the ONLY) companies offering a lifetime warranty for a wireless router, so this bodes well too. Though it doesn't have the maximum amount of configurable options (such as assigning static IP's within DHCP - only directly) I have been quite happy with this product after a few months. When it becomes outdated, it even has a "access point mode" where it can simply be used to boost the range of another existing wireless network.

It is beyond my comprehension why this product has so many 1,2, and 3 star ratings. I wonder if Linksys employees have a bit of free time on their hands or something...I've purchased 3 Linksys wireless routers... I've had nothing but problems with them... dropped connections (wireless AND wired ones were dropped... huh?), security setup issues, and even bad power adapters that just suddenly died! My buddy, who is a network administrator, suggested that I try a higher end Belkin wireless router, meaning this model.The setup was super easy. I just put in my wireless network name, picked a security passcode, and saved the settings (I already had the security passcode put into my laptop) Ever since, the router has just worked perfectly. I never lost a connection or had issues.I had flashbacks of my Linksys models one time. None of my wireless connections were working (wired or wireless ones). The "Internet" light on the Belkin router was flashing yellow. I tried the "Linksys Routine" as I called it, which is unplugging my modem, computer, and router, and restarting them all one by one. I had to do this AT LEAST weekly to get Linksys to work... sometimes daily. My internet connection still didn't work. AFter doing the restart routine again, the internet still wouldn't work.I called my ISP, and they informed me my whole state's internet was down. Their problem should be fixed by the morning. So, the next morning, I fired up my computer and everything worked fine. The Flashing light on the unit had gone back to solid blue. The problem was NOT with the Belkin; the problem was with my whole ISP. The lights are great for showing where any problems are.... unlike the lights on the Linksys, which are virtually useless.I suggest you try this unit if you are tired of other brands and their cheap pieces of junk...

PROs: the visual display showing status on the front is very handy - but it doesn't reflect reality in most situations. It does, however, let you see the unit boot. User interface is straight forward and well laid out. Updates are very simple.CONs: I've loaded two different firmware/SW versions on this unit. The first version would lockup anytime I browsed a remote computer file system more than 3 directories deep. The latest version is significantly worse. It has the same problem and additionly, the wireless unit shuts off after 10 minutes or so, requiring a power cycle to get it restarted. The on-line support is pathetic (just FW downloads, no FAQ or knowledge base at all). Only the latest FW version is posted, so once you upgrade, you can't go backwards. Performance with the Belkin N card was not noticeably different from other systems with generic 'g' cards.Overall, a tremendous disappointment. I'll update as I continue to work with their technical support for a replacement/refund.

I did my research as to what router to buy because I was looking to upgrade from a wireless B. Obviously wanted to be ahead of the game so I found this to be the best reviewed wireless router for Draft N out there. Set up was easy and I loved the idea of the indicators on the front. However, as I used it, found it to be very fussy. It seemed to run very slow and the connection breaks often. I ended up replacing our cable modem but that wasn't the issue either. I also found out that it has some issues concerning xbox live. It will work, but I found that trying to party up with some friends wasn't possible. In the last 3 months I've had to restart it and the modem at least 20 times because the connection slows. Now I am researching to buy a different one because there are just too many little things that give me problems.

Does the job, but needed to research connecting two routers. If that is your intention, go online and get direction from google . Other then that, equipment works well

Now I must start off with that I was a Linksys/Cisco fan for a very long time. It wasn't until my WRT54G died that I decided to try something new. This was priced right for me at the time, so bought this with the free shipping and out of the box it worked like a charm. Now I gave this a 4 out of 5 due to the config cd not even working. Not a big deal, and don't need it since it was a cinch to setup. Now for the inexperienced I would still buy this if you want the faster dl speed, and better range (and pretty blue lights)...just make sure the cd is working. Otherwise it might prove to be a bit much to setup. It even has a connection light for those that just use wifi (shows inet is active). So no real need to use the ports if you're not intending to.
