Breaks your heart
The stories of these amazing refugee girls are heart wrenching. They open your eyes to the cruelty endured by many and inspire you with their resilience. Malala does an incredible job gathering and sharing these stories.

A must read.
'No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark. You only run for the border when you see the whole cityrunning as well.'-Warsan Shire, "Home" 'I wrote this book because it seems that too many people don't understand that refugees are ordinary people. All that differentiates them is that they got caught in the middle of a conflict that forced them to leave their homes, their loved ones, and the only lives they had known. They risked so much along the way, and why? Because it is too often a choice between life and death. And, as my family did a decade ago, they chose life.' -Malala Yousafzai in prologue. I think this about up the book's message perfectly. Here are stories from different girls and a few women that she met while visiting areas as an activist. They are short, but they are haunting. As far as how I feel about the book.... I love it. I want everyone to read it. Far too often the immigration process is seen as a political crisis, and not a humanitarian one. It is easy to read about it and see only numbers. Each one, though, is attached to a person who risked everything for a safer or just plain better life. As humans we deserve to be safe, to know that our family won't be killed.... that there is a community that will stand beside us. Can you imagine having to leave everything you know just to find something so simple? For me, this is a five star book. It is absolutely necessary, especially in this political climate. In honesty, I want everyone reading and discussing this book as well as a few others:The Newcomers: Helen ThorpeThe Diary of Ma Yan, Te Struggles and Hopes of a Chinese Schoolgirl. Ma Yan, edited by Pierre HaskiCall Me American, Abdi Nor IftinHarbor Me, Jacqueline Woodson As an American, I know how lucky I am. I have food, education, my family is safe and healthy. Everyone deserves these things. I am no different than any of the girls in this book.... except that I was born in a country where these things are taken for granted. I thank God for that.... and I want it for everyone. In order to understand how the people seeking to immigrate, or applying for asylum, are feeling I can only look for their stories. To try to empathize... here, with this collection, it's impossible not to. On the adult content scale, there's a lot of hard hitting stuff here.... violence, assault, language... pain. It's emotionally charged and it will wreck you. On the other hand, it's handled in such a way that I would still let my niece read this, or recommend it for required reading in school. I give it a four.

profound
Worthwhile read. If you’ve read I am Malala, the first half of the book will be very familiar. The stories by the other women were profound

Beautiful, touching book
This book is extremely powerful, allowing readers to experience the the heartbreaks, tragedies, and, fortunately, the joys of some "refugee girls around the world." Some stories were painful to read, but I never wanted to stop reading. This is the sort of book that everybody should read so that they understand what it means to be displaced and to try to make a new home in a foreign land.

Important Read for Everyone!
Read this because I had heard about Malala and some of the desperate refugee situations across the globe. This was an eye-opening book and necessary for everyone to read in order to understand what refugees go through. In order to help solve the problem, we need to understand what it's like to be in their shoes. So grateful to Malala for sharing these true stories and giving a voice to these incredible young women.

When and why they Flee: a small window into the experiences of a young woman refugee
THIS IS a very informative book. This young woman has endured so much. The story of her life evokes emotion of empathy and gratitude to live in a country, although not perfect, but where girls may attend school. This is a must read for any one who wants to know what it is like to be a young refugee. So many of us take our freedoms for granted and have no idea why families flee the countries of their birth.

“Together our stories span the globe even as they are grounded in our hearts.“
I used to think, “Why don’t people stay in their own countries and fight to make things better?” This book is an account that clearly, concisely, straightforwardly, empathetically explains why. Please read it.

The book describes several stories of displaced people or refugees and partly Malala's own story. Creates more understanding for refugees and their issues.

Very powerful eye opening read
It has further increased my sympathy for those who have gone through unimaginable horrors. It is truely frightening what people can be capable off. Malala is an inspirational woman for telling these stories of her own experience and that of others. We are all human beings and should support those who want to make a positive difference in our world. Refugees are welcome here

Must Read
Hearing from survivors allows one to know about struggles faced by specific individuals and not just numbers in media reports. This book also shows how bonding creates hope and new beginnings.
