Distillers Handy Kitchen Guide: How to Make Moonshine, Vodka, Whiskey and Other Liquors Like A Southern Pro

A Complete Waste of 3 Bucks
Besides the lack of any good editing or proofreading and aside from the apparent lack of any grammatical skill this was still the absolute worst work on distilling I have ever read. Its author obviously has zero experience actually distilling or brewing, and he writes like a ten-year-old--actually, I have taught ten-year-olds who were better writers. If you want to learn how to make whiskey, you would be better advised to watch an episode of Moonshiners, or ANY of the current vogue TV shows devoted to the subject of distillation. On top of all that, this child-author has no comprehension of history whatsoever. Here are some of the more technical gripes about the book: - Claim: "The federal government has made moonshine illegal, mostly because it is highly unstable during the distillation process." Absolutely not true. Moonshine was made illegal for many reasons, the LEAST of which was a dangerous process. - Claim: "Anything can be distilled...potatoes, grapes, yeast or anything else." Ahem...yeast? Yeast cannot be distilled without a starch, preferably a fructose. - Claim: "[Russian vodka]...is made from potatoes." Actually, the standard and most preferred vodkas from Russia are grain-based. Potato vodkas are considered vastly inferior. - Claim: "[to make moonshine] the sugar and water is [sic] distilled together for an extended period of time...but oxygen is not able to enter and come in contact with the fermentation." This author does not know what the difference is between mashing, fermenting, and distillation. In fact, the terms are so jumbled throughout that it is hard to decipher what he means. - Claim: moonshine is made from malted grain and cornmeal, whiskey is made from malted corn, vodka is made from sugar. I'll let the critics talk about that. - Misusage: the author has mash as mush, or wash, distillation as fermentation in places, as mash in others.Again, this book MUST be a joke, for that is the only possible explanation. DON'T BUY IT!

I Come From a Long Line of Moonshiners
I come from a long line of moonshiners. Grandpa was the last of them and he didn't make the stuff, he only delivered it from the still to the city when he was a young man. However, Great-grandad and numerous great-uncles made the stuff and our family was supposedly well known for the quality of their 'shine back in Kentucky. And so, when I stumbled upon this book, I simply had to buy it and read it.The author has gone to great effort to give us a bit of the history of moonshine and other illegal spirits. He doesn't glorify this illegal activity but neither does he villify it.All in all, this was an enjoyable book to read and it brought back a lot of memories from my own childhood, sitting at Grandpa's knee and listening to his tales of adventure when he was being chased by "those dang revenuers".For an entertaining read about an old-fashioned way of life, I highly recommend this book. I only gave it 4 stars, though, because even though he came mighty close, the author stopped short of giving any specifics that would let me try this myself.

I bought this book as a gift for a family ...
I bought this book as a gift for a family member who has recently become interested in distilling. It provides more than just recipes but is not a kitchen guide as you need a lot of expensive equipment to complete them. Some of the directions and entails for the distilling was also incorrect. Overall it was a decent gift for someone learning about the history and process but I would not purchase this book again.

Look Elsewhere
So, was this written while drinking moonshine? So many grammatical errors, and information that is simply not relevant. For such a small book (34 pages) you would think there would be more information on making the alcohol, but no. Crap about other crap. Here is an example of the grammar:"Chapter 2 - The Right Tools Need For Moonshine Whiskey"...what?"Chapter 3 - How To Make Moonshine and Make Whiskey"...why two 'Make's?It goes on like that, and there are sentences that just don't make sense. I wouldn't bother with this book, there are several others that are much better. Move along.

very very basic
I must have read a different book than the other reviewers. This is quick read and very, very basic overview of the subject and would have been improved on by someone proof reading it, especially someone who actually knew about distilling. The history channel show narrated by Billy ray was more informative than this is. Definitely do not use this as a reference if you are wanting to try making your own. This book is a delete. Amazon has many other books on the subject, Youtube has info and many other internet sites for research.

Distillers Handbook
Took too much time trying to scare you about stills blowing up. I am not about to let any of my alcohol vapor loose, I want it all in the jar. The author does go on and shows something's, but has a habit of not finishing a subject before moving on.

Dangerous Distilling!
I've made beer at home (badly), failed miserably with a wine kit, so grabbed this book to see if I could make a palatable equivalent to my favourite Irish whiskey. However the first few chapters soon made me realise that the risk to life and limb from attempting to make my own moonshine version probably outweigh the savings! If you are brave enough, and have a safe area to do so, Trevor does explain the equipment, the process and the recipes is this fascinating book - definitely worth a read.

This book is CRAP!
I was buying home brewing ingredients and equipment and Amazon recommended this book. I bought it for some recipes and thought it would help me figure out how to mash-in and understand how to correctly create the mash. You can learn more from watching a few episodes of "MoonShiners". I should have read the reviews because this book is garbage! Not worth it even with Amazon Prime. The author knows nothing about distilling! The book is riddled with misinformation and assumptions drawn on little-to-no experience on the subject matter. The recipes are nothing more than add corn to some water and cook. CRAP!!! More information can be obtained on about or wikihow

A small insite into moonshine
As a novice brewer, I was hoping to get a bit more information on how to set up the brewing systems with images and maybe some diagrams. I will be referring back to this book once I have completed a primer and got the basics out of the way.The author has a lot of information and offers a range of different brewing and distilling options, so I'll be looking forward to trying them out when I'm ready.
