Product Information After the Clan Refusal War decimated the forces of both Clan Jade Falcon and Clan Wolf, Clan Ghost Bear remains as the most powerful of Clans. But a terrible crime has been committed. Someone has stolen the stored genetic material of the Clan's founders, the very legacy of Clan Ghost Bear. You must conduct a series of raids to find out who was responsible for this crime and then punish them severely while recovering the genetic materials. MechWarrior 2: Expansion Pack - Ghost Bear's Legacy is an expansion for the original MechWarrior 2. You begin as a Clan Ghost Bear cadet, partaking in a series of missions leading to the recovery of Clan Ghost Bear's genetic legacy, and must complete the mission objectives in each level successfully to advance. If you cannot complete the mission objectives or are destroyed, the mission is considered a failure. The game remains faithful to the original MechWarrior 2, giving players the opportunity to pilot a range of mechs while viewing the game's 3D world from a first person perspective. Several new mechs and equipment types have been added to MechWarrior 2's roster for this game. In addition to the standard locales found in the original MechWarrior 2, the game adds in several missions with unique arctic, underwater and outer space environments. MechWarrior 2: Expansion Pack - Ghost Bear's Legacy uses a unique difficulty determining system. In the first mission, you fight against an endless stream of opposing mechs. The game then tailors its difficulty depending on the number of mechs you destroy before your own destruction.

Flawed Expansion
I'm writing this review more than a decade after the fact, so take it with a grain of salt. Mechwarrior 2 was huge when I was a kid, and I have some very fond memories of playing it with my dad. Even today that game is still a blast to play with MechVM, even on Windows 10 with modern hardware. The story is still great, the DOS version aged very well because the graphics are stylish and simple, and the gameplay is still engaging. That being said Ghost Bear's Legacy is mostly more of the same. That's a great thing for people like me who love Mechwarrior 2, but there are some real headscratchers in GBL that I just can't get over. The biggest deal breaker for me are the unresolved glitches in the game, I can't count how many times I spawned through the ground and insta failed the mission as a result. Other missions drag on so long that they are almost impossible to beat without cheats (that evil sea mission, you will see for yourself). The game also forces you to select one mech and stick with it for 4 or 5 missions at a time without being able to switch. That's a neat idea and makes some sense lore wise, but if you pick a Firemoth for lulz and manage to beat a mission, you're going to get mauled later on and be stuck with your tin can until you restart. That's not fun, and I don't know why the developers wanted to limit the fun. On a more positive note the game still holds up as well as its sibling, and the added mechs look and operate wonderfully. The campaign is quite long and has a more structured narrative, although I found it disengaging personally. The voice acting is subpar, but the atmosphere makes up for it. It's definitely worth a play, but I can't praise it as much as Mechwarrior 2 because it is objectively a lesser game.
