An excellent book on an often-misunderstood subject
As someone who is an X.500 professional, I can vouch for this book. While various implementations are covered as examples, this book primarily leans towards LDAP theory rather than practical How-To's.The book is very standards oriented, but overall is easier to digest than an RFC. For one thing, there does seem to be a hint of personality ... an impressive feat considering the admittedly dry subject at hand. For another, there are nice diagrams.Like anything LDAP related, this book is very dense ... a LOT of content is covered. People who WANT to learn LDAP will find this book more accommodating than those who are merely required to do so, as the subject itself is so deep and so archaic that it borders on the mysterious. Prepare yourself.I would have to say this is my favorite LDAP book of all time.

Great LDAP book for Beginner or Experienced
This is truly one of the best Information Technology books I have ever read. It is well organized, easy to read with good diagrams and examples. It is both thorough and complete; putting the directory into a living context. They also warn you about why you might not want to do some things that don't otherwise seem dangerous. It also has a superb index (something sorely lacking in many modern software books). So for education or reference, I would choose this one; can't see that I would need any other on this topic. My thanks to the authors.

Great book to get you up to speed on the concepts
This book gives an in depth overview of LDAP. If you know very little about LDAP and want know what it is, what different vendor implementations are available(at the time of the publication), some of the ways it can be used, underlying commands and protocol, how to make design decisions, and many other aspects, then this is the book for you.If you want to deploy Active Directory or some other implementation, this may not be what you want as it isn't specific. However, I'd think it would be good to have for background. It is academic in that it covers all aspects of LDAP in some degree--not getting into any specific implementation. It does a good job in explaining what a directory is and isn't and when to use it versus a relational database.Overall it is a great book on the topic of LDAP. More books may be needed to compliment it for specific implementations or programming.

Not for programmers or existing ldap systems, no JNDI.
I know it is focused on "understanding" and "deploying", and that there are other books specifically on programming it, but in 846 pages I would have liked to have more treatment of different use in real APIs. The explanations are too long winded for me, I usually got the point half way through and wished it would get on with it. All in all, I wanted a book that covered all of LDAP, I didn't want 3 different 800 page books. There is also basically zilch about JNDI.

Four Stars
While very Netscape oriented, the basics of LDAP are there and applicable across implementations.

It's the LDAP bible.
This book has everything you needed to know about LDAP, but didn't know to ask. Awesone technical coverage as well as some really good ideas for deployment strategies.

Informative
A very informative book. I think some of the references and setup are geared towards Netscape with is a bit dated. But it definitely cover the important aspects with plenty of details
