Leviton 48643-E 15 Amp

This is a very good option for a vintage piece of electrical equipment that draws 15 amp or less. In my case it is a lamp so this firs nicely in the range. WHile it is a modern product it is designed to look like the old originals with modern safety in mind. At first glance you cannot see what was updated and that is great!!Very pleased with the results and best of all, it is reasonably priced.

Easy to instal and works well.

Be sure to strip the insulation from the wire without cutting any of the strands. Use the proper size stripper for the wire size. If short strands are left on the connecting wire .you could end up with a short circuit from one connection between the two screws. Other wise I reccomened this plug.

If you're in a hurry, you'll be frustrated

This is an old school, unpolarized replacement plug. It’s a made-in-Mexico bargain. The blades are identical so it can be plugged in either way. This might pose a safety hazard for some ungrounded appliances, should they short out internally. Its sturdy and well made and once installed should last, just about forever. But there’s the rub. Installation is not convenient or easy. First, a bar code label covers one side and obscures the latch under it. If you pry open just the exposed latch, the plug won’t come apart. You have to pry on both sides to release both latches and the label hides that fact. Then, the installation requires some forethought (no instructions supplied). Before wiring up, you need to thread half the plug, the cover, over the lead and tie an underwriter’s knot. There isn’t a lot of room for it to fit, so, if taking the plug apart was hard, putting it back together is harder still. I needed a pair of pliers because I didn’t have the finger strength to assemble the plug. You'll also need a slot-head screwdriver to pry it apart and to screw the terminals down. Not necessary, but because a soldering iron was handy, I also soldered the stripped wire ends so that they wouldn’t spread under compression. If you have the time, this is a good plug made of good materials. If you are in a hurry, you will be frustrated and disappointed.

Nicely made, secure terminal covers.

I bought these to repair cord sets on used lamps donated to our organization. The design of these is in keeping with various vintage design lamps and are direct replacements. The terminal screws on these are very securely covered and protected with a plastic snap on shield; no more cardboard cut out to damage or lose. Much safer design than the original.

The 1970s called and they want their plug bag. Dangerous and frustrating to assemble.

I ignored the reviews and chose this plug because it's $1.00 less than the other plugs. There's a good reason for that. This plug reminds me of something I would have seen in the 1970s on an old fan. There are no safety safeguards and it would be easy for the wires to cross inside the plug. Also because of the design, if someone pulls the plug by the cord, it will likely pull the wire out of the plug as there is no second safeguard, just the screws holding the wires to the terminal. Most modern plugs have these safeguards built in.As others have said, it is extremely difficult to separate the two pieces to disassemble the plug. I ended up using a letter opener and the rubber is pretty deformed, but it does work.I would never ever buy this plug again. Leviton needs to discontinue this.

Really Good Quality Old Style Plug

This is a quality plug. Wiring it up didn't require any stange wire routing or frustrating screwdowns. The hardest part is prying the flexible plastic cover past the tabs to take it off. Best to get the cover slightly warm to increase flexibility and try not to stab your fingers with the screwdriver. In actual usage, it is a little wide and will block plugs next to it.

AMAZON'S CHOICE? REALLY ?

If you have a desire to jam a screwdriver through your hand, this is the plug for you.Not only is it impossible to open the plug without going into the Total Destruction Mode, it is impossible to open the plug unless two screwdrivers can be held in a prying position while simultaneously pulling the plug out with a pair of plyers while also holding onto the shell of the plug. Three to Four hands are required.1 MONTH LATER:I actually got to use this plug by heating it up with a hair dryer which allowed me to remove the shell from the plug. After it cooled off, it more or less assumed it's "pre-hair dryer shape". Because there was no room for an electrician's knot, I locked the AC wire in place with a dose of silicone on the entrance hole. So the plug is OK if you're willing to buy a hair dryer, a tube of silicone and mark the polarity with model airplane paint. I didn't notice these requirements on the Amazon page.Leviton should be embarrassed for creating such a horrid device.
