No birds so far
We bought it to keep away blue herons from our pond...we haven't seen any herons since the purchase, so I guess it's working well, but to be honest, we've only seen a few over the year anyway, but a heron actually stood in our pond which prompted us to buy the reflector.. It was easy to put in pond and has not moved from it's spot...Fish don't seem to mind it either.

Nothing but a large, cheap, Christmas Ornament.
Whether this works or not, I have no idea. Since using it, I have not had a Blue Herron return but I also employed other tactics like a fake herron and an ultrasonic deterrent light. This is incredibly overpriced. It's like a large plastic Christmas Ornament. It also collects water and has to be periodically drained. Only nice thing is it comes with a rock that is attached to fishing line so you can keep it from floating all over the pond.

Expensive and ineffective
I have a small koi pond with koi and goldfish. I have lost many fish to heron over the years and tried a number of deterrents. We recently had our pond renovated with a beautiful new waterfall and landscaping. At the time I was using fishing line strung across the pond diagonally in combination with some boards around the pond edge to which I had added staples such that they stuck out of the boards. I placed the boards around the pond's edge so the herons had no place to stand (like they use for pigeons on buildings). This worked well for 3 years, but was ugly and dangerous for kids and dogs. When the landscaper recommended the Velda heron ball I gave it a try. It seemed to work until the heron's found the pond again in the fall. We spotted them on a few morningS and they quickly flew away, but not before we lost one of the goldfish (it was 6 inches and about 8 years old). The Velda ball SIMPLY DOES NOT SCARE THE BIRDS. I moved it around to a few locations, but no results. SAVE YOUR MONEY. I have a net over the pond for now until the herons move onto a new location.

Good and bad
I really liked the ball and did seem to work, however it's slowly fills with water and sinks so you have to keep pulling it out and draining it.

The heron laughed
I put this in my pond when I received it. The next morning I looked out and saw my nemesis, the heron, standing in the pond right next to this decoration. I think I heard him laughing at me... If you buy this, consider it a decoration, because that's how the herons react to it.

An attractive heron deterrent!
This heron deterrent is actually pretty. It even shines/glows when the pond light hit it at night. I love that it came with a rock weight & string. Now to see if it works!

This device works provided you look after it.
This purchase was a replacement. My first Heron Ball appeared to work since it stopped heron attacks during their nesting season. However it is important to realise that the ball is not hermetically sealed. This is OK provided the 'plug' used for attaching the nylon cord is kept underwater. I had ensured that the cord which tethers the ball was short enough to ensure this. However during a warm, dry spell in spring the water level in the pond dropped resulting in the plug being only partially submerged. This allowed the ball to partially fill with water which slowly removed the silvering on the inner surface of the ball. The result was an unwelcome visit by a heron. To preserve the silvering on the replacement I have attached a small stone directly under the ball. This submerged stone is just heavy enough to keep the ball upright.

Heron No More
Simple but effective way to keep Heron out of your pond. This globe with an eye on it certainly does the trick I watched a heron circle above my koi pond as in came in lower it all of a sudden changed direction and was gone.I really could hardly believe what I had seen I was all ready to go out with my brush shaft to chase the heron off. This simple inexspensive globe is well worth the money.

Giant reflective bauble.
Bought this as a present for my father. He loves the way it looks, so he is happy. From my point of view when i purchased this i also inspected it. Heres my thoughts...1. Looks like a giant upside down christmas bauble which is reflective silver and has a heron eye painted on it.2. Nice and lite, so floats well.3. Is held down by a small pebble. Conclusion, i think its probably easy to make and paying £20 for it seems quite expensive.Time will tell if it works.Update: after 3 months I'm the pond I t was found floating around because the plastic wire had snapped. (perhaps the fish chewed it...)

Didn't faze Elvis
It may be that Elvis, our heron is just a bit bold, but these didn't put him off at all 🙄. He was snacking on tadpoles and froglets at the edge of the pond so maybe it did stop him wading in further. One of the balls filled with water so I retrieved it, emptied it and put a piece of plastic over the hole before putting the lid back on. Worked fine. Anyway,I like them on the pond regardless of function.
