For students with limited time: this book is the best
Of course I'd prefer to have my yeshiva students study Hebrew language 4 hours a day--but in the real world in the USA, in most of the right of center yeshivot you're lucky if they learn Heberw at all. I have 3 hours a week with my students, and their limudei kodesh classes are not "ivrit be-ivrit."Ora Band's book is perfect for such students: It is systematic; it explains grammar concepts in English; it is 100% appropriate --no bikini clad babes (a la Hebrew from Scratch) --although I must say that my boys got a naughty chuckle out of the drawing on page 30)--and one book leads into another.I have found it useful to test the boys using the GWU Hebrew placement test(downloadable). if they score more than 40 out of 88 on that test, I give them the "final Exam" available in Ora Band's Teacher's Edition. Based on that final, I can pinpont at what stage they need to start in her book. The lowest scoring students start at ch. 1 and the other students get supplementary work until the rest of the class catches up with them.Band's book gives useful vocabulary, and it doesn't make the error of giving too much information too soon.Suggestions: a cassette tape of audio cd would be a nice compliment to this series, as well as teacher's editions for the 2nd and 3rd volumes.

Great resource that actually teaches the language
This is a great resource for learning Modern Hebrew. Many resources only teach decoding skills or a bit of vocabulary but this one teaches you how to construct sentences, understand grammar, gain new vocabulary, etc. It is really a language learning book. It has chapters with written exercises and stories to read. I only wish there was a companion story book or other book to read more stories/ articles at the level in the book with my current vocabulary. Having used the book both in a class with a Modern Hebrew teacher and on my own for self study, it is preferable to have the instructor there for answers to questions. A teacher's addition or an answer key would help those doing self study but I have not seen that one is available. It is one of the few resources I have found that teaches Modern Hebrew with explanations in English.

Superb
This series is superb compared to other books I have purchased for learning modern Hebrew, including Esther Raizen's 'Modern Hebrew for Beginners,' in my opinion. I would not recommend this for absolute beginners (I.e. those who have not yet learned the alphabet or begun reading simple texts), it is perfect however for those who have engaged in intensive study of the language for at least several months and who have a good handle on reading. Vowel points are included throughout the book so correct pronunciation is no hassle. The book includes nine units that gradually build vocabulary and grammar using fun and engaging stories. ( Not only is new vocabulary listed in sidenotes with each story, a list of the new vocabulary is given directly following each story, then it provides other examples of the words in use). Another thing that makes this book superior in quality is the simple explanations of verb conjugations and grammar rules. There are no long paragraphs explaining syntax and grammar, but single sentences that simplify the understanding of otherwise confusing rules. The book also facilitates memory because it uses vocabulary learned from previous lessons with each new lesson, and builds upon what you already know. There is much more I could say about this book, but I encourage you to see for yourself.

I didn't need it...but that's okay
I ordered this book because I wanted to go on learning Hebrew and as it doesn't include learning to read and write, I thought it might be good for my level of proficiency. But, all of the material that's included in this book was below my level so it wasn't of any value to me. Still, having looked at this book thoroughly, I believe that it certainly could be an excellent source of proceeding with learning Hebrew AFTER you've become capable of reading and writing in that language.

Great Book!
The book is wonderful, as good as its "brothers" Shlav Beit, Shlav Gimel and the Hebrew Reader. The authors have a refined kind of pedagogical sensibility.I have many books teaching Hebrew but this one and its continuation are the best!

This Isn't "Hebrew For Vacation", Thankfully
Hebrew is not spoken by very many people, and as such it can be hard to find good resources for learning the language in English (also, there really is a difference between Biblical and the Medieval forms of Hebrew as well, and one must be careful if you want to specifically learn modern, Israeli Hebrew). That which exists IS good, but mostly assumes that you just want to travel to Israel on vacation, or to move there and just need enough Hebrew to get into deeper lessons once you arrive. I want to do neither, and have desperately wanted a more "traditional" learning text. This book is exactly what I wanted. It teaches Hebrew with dialogues, stories, texts, basically just ignoring the usual "here is a conversation between two people at a ticket counter" type of lesson. There are good explanations of grammar, and interesting facts as well. It's a really good book.Yes, you do need to know how to read Hebrew characters before you begin.....though there are many good, free resources to learn this, and one should focus on that first anyhow. Some people would prefer guidance with the alef-bet, though, and that is lacking here. Another drawback, as has been stated before, is that it does assume some foreknowledge of Hebrew. And that is true, however it assumes that you know just a little bit, and if you don't know anything a dictionary and a bit of extra time will help you learn what you need as you go. I do not see this as a weakness, but some might. A third point is that the book lacks an answer key. This is a weakness, however Hebrew is a language, and a language is a complete system. I personally prefer to try to work out why I am right or wrong myself, and take the time to review previous work constantly. Some people, however, would be more comfortable with an answer key.All that being said, this is a GREAT book for learning Hebrew with a focus on reading and writing - something that other texts severely lack.

Great book for non-hebrew speakers who need English explanations
This book is best used with a teacher, but can also be studied alone. It begins with the basics and is very thurough.
