Healthy Cooking & Healthy Fun For Recreational - Even Emergency Situations
The media could not be loaded. When it comes to open campfire cooking, cast iron is my preferred cookware. There is something about the taste, the smell and the nostalgia of it all.. Cast Iron has stood the test of time over the centuries. -From the European settlers to the original cowboys, cast iron was found in their fire-pits.. And that’s just in the New World. The dutch oven is my go-to cookware when the situation allows it. The recipe possibilities are endless and cooking in cast iron is a much healthier choice than other metals. It’s not a viable choice if you need to be on the move & carrying your gear. But if you have your vehicle or decide to stay-in during the emergency scenario, then cast iron may be a solution for you to look into. It’s simplicity & versatility bode well in emergencies, especially small groups. Spending quality time with your family during an emergency, preparing a meal around the fire, can make all the difference when it comes to mental sanity. When I was a camp counselor in training, in the boy scouts, I was exposed to this cast iron thing which attached to 2 rods. I was familiar with many cast iron cooking tools but had never seen this one. It was my first exposure to Rome’s Pie Iron. We buttered up the outside of the sliced bread that we “borrowed” from the mess hall and put some American cheese in the middle. We placed it in the pie iron & laid the iron on the coals. A few minutes & a few flips of the iron later, it was time to open it up. MAN! I had never had a better grilled cheese in my life! – Let’s just say that the pie iron left an impression. The possibilities with the pie iron is limited to your imagination. You can make anything from apple pies to empanadas. You can make some amazing pizza and you can grill the tastiest vegetables; it’s all up to you and your practice with the iron. The good thing is that the more that you use it, the better that food becomes. It’s known as cast-iron cooking, Magic! 😉SPEC ON ROME’S DOUBLE PIE IRON:The King Of Pie Irons, Makes Two At A TimeMade From Solid Cast IronFirepits & CampfiresDimensions: 28 x 8.5 x 2 inchesCooking surface: 8.5″ x 4.25″Weight: 5.1 poundsChrome plated rodsWooden handlesMade in ChinaSince 1964Watch My Video Review For More Detail

Legacy quality!
Heavy cast iron, not the modern stuff that only looks like cast iron. And the handles are long enough to keep you from falling into the firepit. These will last for generations. Seller shipped them really well and quickly.

Well Made But One
Just received my Double Pie Iron today and seasoned it for use. Overall construction is good and I'm sure this thing will last longer than I'll be around. I should have gotten the short handled version as I love grilled sandwiches so I'll probably be using this more at home, but this one will work double duty at home and while camping so the extra long handles will come in handy outdoors. As with all cast iron, they take time to season so this one will take a little more preparation before it's ready for full time work. My first grilled ham and cheese stuck a little but they'll get better. As for the size of the iron, the bread here (Japan) is a little larger than American bread so I had to cut it down to size, but the deep pockets of this iron gives plenty of room to add lots of goodies. I cut my ham thick, added two slices of cheese, some tomato slices, the dressing and spices, and all fit well within this iron. The one thing I would like to see, however, is a crimper around the edges and down the middle. My sandwiches fell apart as I pulled them out because there is no crimper to fuse the two slices of bread together. Perhaps I should have tried making them without cutting the bread to fit inside and just left it hanging out, but that would have really smoked up the place as the edges would have burned in the fire. It might work, but I'd rather have everything inside away from the flames and sealed for easier removal. All in all, a good product and I'm sure I'll get lots of use from it.

Reliving childhood camping memories!
One of my favorite memories of camping as a child was my mom making all sorts of amazing things in her old Pie Iron. So while preparing for our upcoming family camping trip with our 5 kids (ages 2-14) and my in-laws, I decided to pick some up! Due to the amount of people that were camping with us, I decided to buy 1 single and 2 double pie irons.I researched and prepared a plethora of meal and snack ideas ahead of time. And everything was a huge hit! We made blueberry stuffed French toast for breakfast, ham and cheese "hot pockets" for lunch, and fruit pies for a late night snack (pictured: strawberry cream cheese fruit pie using croissant dough dusted with powered sugar). We used both bread and croissant dough for different pies and they both worked out great! But the croissant dough really surprised me at how easy it cooked up and how delicious it was!The pie iron itself is very sturdy. It also comes out of the fire very hot! So make sure you keep them away from curious kids once you pull them out of the fire. The handles are comfortable and there is a metal latch that keeps the 2 sides locked together while cooking. My only complaint about the double pie iron is that it is very heavy. I bought 2 of them thinking it would feed our larger group quicker, which it did. But I definitely got a workout! I understand that this is just part of the territory with this product, so it didn't affect my overall rating. However, I'm gonna see if the hubby can't build some sort of pie iron tripod to help in the future! For all I know, maybe such a thing already exists!I would definitely recommend this for camping! Everyone enjoyed the food we made with them. There are a lot of recipe ideas available on the internet or be creative - the possibilities are endless!
