Night of the Demons

Angela is having a party, Jason and Freddy are too scared to come. But You'll have a hell of a time.
Angela and her best friend Suzanne are throwing a Halloween party at Hull House, which is an abandoned local mortuary. They're soon joined at Hull House by Stooge, Helen, Roger, Judy, Jay, Max, Frannie and Sal. Before a couple of them go inside, one tells a story about the place being haunted and evil spirits are trapped inside by an underground stream that surrounds it. Once they're all inside, the booze starts to flow and the dancing begins, until the radio's battery power dies. Angela then suggests that the group hold a sΓ©ance, where she has everyone sit down in front of a large mirror. When everybody turns around, Helen looks back into the mirror and sees a demon's face and then her dead body, before the mirror falls and smashes on the ground. The mirror breaking seems to release a demon in spirit form from the furnace down in the crematorium, it rises up the stairs and possesses one of the group. The rest are now at risk of being killed or possessed, they'll have to find a way to escape or manage to stay alive until the sun comes up.The acting in Night Of The Demons is pretty poor, but it's ridiculously entertaining with them all playing stereotypes. Hal Havins is probably the most memorable as the fat and obnoxious, Stooge. Billy Gallo is almost as funny as the tough kid from the wrong side of the tracks. Cathy Podewell was actually pretty good as the attractive but reserved girl with the cocky younger brother. The two that had some level of fame in horror films were Amelia Kinkade and Linnea Quigley who played Angela and Suzanne, Kinkade went on to become the face of the two sequels and Quigley had already spent most of the '80s taking her clothes off in classics like The Return Of The Living Dead and Savage Streets. It's directed by Kevin Tenney who had made the very decent Witchboard two years earlier, he recently made a really fun horror/comedy called Brain Dead. There's a fair few topless scenes including one of the freakiest I've ever seen, it involves lipstick and was brilliantly done. There's a good level of blood and gore, and the make up effects work really well most of the time. I absolutely love the score, as soon as the film starts and the brilliant '80s synth music kicks in, I knew I was in for a treat. The opening title sequence was done using animation, it's really fun and something different. The new DVD that Anchor Bay released in 2011 is pretty good, the picture quality is by far the best I've ever seen it, the brilliant soundtrack is the clearest I've ever heard it, and there's some okay extras. There's My Demon Nights which is a 14 minute featurette with Linnea Quigley talking about the film and her career. I've been a fan of Quigley's for many years now and she's probably my favourite scream queen of the '80s, she always comes across as being very fun and witty in her interviews. Promo reel, theatrical trailer, video trailer, tv spots and a really good extra that isn't listed anywhere on the dvd case or in the extras. There's an audio commentary that is hidden away in set-up, it's a commentary with the director and the two producers. It's a really decent commentary that's full of information and anecdotes, I love a good commentary and can't believe it isn't mentioned on the case. Probably the worst thing about the DVD is the awful artwork on the cover, I love the old cover with the demonic Angela holding an invitation. I really don't know what's going on with the new cover, it looks revolting. Night Of The Demons isn't a masterpiece for those that haven't seen it, it's just an extremely fun and enjoyable film that works for me, there's a couple of one star reviews from people where it obviously didn't work for them. There was a very good sequel from Ozploitation master Brian Trenchard-Smith who also directed Turkey Shoot, there was then a Night Of The Demons 3 that went straight to video and wasn't so good. A remake was made a few years ago starring Edward Furlong, I really didn't like it at all and gave it a rather scathing 2 star review a while back. This original is far superior.

Party Till You Die
Welcome to Angela's Halloween party. It's a riot. Held at abandoned funeral parlour in the sticks, Hull House, a place with a terrible history where the spirits flow freely. There's just one problem. Staying alive till the morning. For some reason I never got to see this film in the 80's. It was worth the wait, as I knew I was going to love it right from hearing the cheesy synth score that accompanies the opening credits. The usual ingredients of 1980's horror are all present. Great, imaginative special effects in a time before C.G.I. Bad acting and a group of teen stereotypes. A subtle dose of humour running alongside the horror. It's an irresistable mix.'Night Of The Demons' belongs amongst the best of the decade. The fact it is largely forgotten, whilst 'The Evil Dead' gets all the plaudits is mainly due to lack of distribution and restricted availability on dvd until recently. It's a hugely enjoyable horror film, both a creepy old house story and a Halloween treat. One thing that disappoints slight is the lack of extras on this Anchor Bay release, the higlight probably being a featurette 'My Demon Nights', basically an interview with Scream Queen Linnea Quigley. The cover art for this dvd is awful, doing this great film no favours at all. 5 out of 5 for the main event anyway.

"EAT A BOWL OF F**k! I'AM HERE TO PARTYYY!"
I guess most people know the story behind this film directed by Kevin S.Tenny in 1987The critics didn't like this film when first released but became a massive hit on Home Video sinceThe story centres around a group of teenagers who really have nothing really in common with each other spending time at a HalloweenParty organised by Angela, in a old funeral home. The good news!We finally get this on Blu-Ray!I have compared the picture quality to the old Anchor R2 releaseΒ Night of The Demons [DVD ] and it's a marked improvement over that formatSound for Blu-ray: 2.0Picture frame for Blu-ray: 10.80pThe bad news! This release has no extras it's a bare bone disc you have to fiddle around with the options as it's in Spanish,Would have been great if we could have had a disc full of special features as with the Shout Factory ReleaseOverall apart from the above this is a great film and I would recommend checking out Kevin Tenny's earlier release of Witchboard [Blu-ray] [1986] [US Import ]

LESSON IN APPLYING LIPSTICK
Terrific 80s horror, it's basically apossession/haunted house moviedone with a bit of verve. This is theuncut (i think, it runs 89 mins 35 secsand seems like a previous uncut printi've seen) Spanish? blu ray release. The picture takes up all the roomon a modern TV (yes!) and looks suitably nice, trailer is the only extra i think. The lead ' alice in wonderland' girl has theacting skills of a broken cupboard door, butthis IS the 80s and all is forgiven. It plays on UK blu ray players as well.Stooge is king.HUMBERTO DE LA TORRE
