They are not. The waters these fish come from are nowhere near the most polluted waters.

Q: how long is the shelf life?

The expiration date is two years out but these sardines are so tasty I don't expect them to be around two months from now. HOWEVER: I opened a jar this morning that didn't "pop," indicating that it wasn't properly sealed, causing me to throw it out. Next jar in line was fine.
