Very satisfied with this purchase but beware the map update...
Very satisfied with this purchase so far. Both units arrived in good working/cosmetic condition with all accessories included. A word of warning to all Garmin automotive GPS users. "DO NOT" update to new map version 2017.20. It is a disaster. When I received this purchase I decided to update all 5 of my Garmins to the 2017.20 maps. A huge mistake. I had updated 4 of 5 units before I discovered the new 2017.20 update is full of errors and omissions. It gets the street or road name correct but does not recognize many of the house or building numbers. The one Garmin GPS I did not update that is still running the 2015.40 maps recognizes the house or building numbers as it always has. I contacted Garmin and they told me they are aware of the problem and suggested I report the errors using their error report form but I am not going to devote that much of my time to correct their mistake. I have found literally hundreds of errors/omissions in just the past two weeks (I do field service work and go to 60 to 90 addresses per day). For those that may wonder all the units have excess memory capacity remaining most with about 70% utilization.

Good GPS, expected better accuracy
Having used this for a couple of months now, I've updated the review, knocking a star off my original rating.I bought a refurbished unit on Amazon for a really good price, only $50-$60 more than new units with far fewer features and more bulk. I've used this for over two months and haven't experienced any bugs that some complained about. My guess is that early problems were fixed with software updates.I bought this to replace a Garmin Nuvi 785 that was stolen from my car.Positives:1. Screen is very bright and accurately responds to touch, much more so than other GPS units I've used.2. Split screen junction views work great. My 785 showed only the junction view when it did come up, and sometimes I wanted to see the normal map view. This model solves that problem.3. The mount is terrific--easy to attach the unit, and the built-in speaker is louder and clearer than my 785.4. Voice commands work resonably well. Well enough that I use the feature. (See the other side of the coin under negatives below)5. The maps look better than other units I've used, and the added terrain not only looks good but is helpful. Routing is "good" but read negatives below.6. There are a lot of "destinations" built in. Of the 20 or so I have tried so far, 15 or more were in there, and these were not necessarily major places.7. Map and software updates worked easily using a Windows 7 computer. The first map download did take a long time, 3 hours, but once downloaded, the actual update of the unit took less than 30 minutes with no hiccups. If you've used the internet anytime since the 90's, you shouldn't have any problems using Garmin's update site.8. Portrait mode is nice for carrying around. It reorients quickly when rotated, faster than my iPhone does.9. Since my last one got stolen from my car, I'm using the "anti-theft" feature (see negative comment below). I use a 4 digit pin to unlock every time, which is less of a nuisance than I imagined, or it can be unlocked at a location of your choosing, such as your driveway.Negatives:1. Routing seems to have taken a step back from my 785. It seems to get confused when multiple highways are coming together and splitting apart again. I have two examples. First, it messed up the I90/I71/176 interchange in Cleveland. It routed me past the easy, safe way to get into 176 from I-90 and tried to get me to cross 4 lanes of I71 to get to 176. Can't say for sure, but I don't think my 785 would have done this. Second time was in Florida. I can't recall the exact highway now, but there was a point when it was saying to stay right when the correct instruction was to stay in the left lanes when the highways split. The map had it correct, but the voice instruction was just plain wrong. This is bad because it isn't always safe to be looking at the map when on a busy highway that is splitting.2. Voice commands could be better. In particular, there is a delay between the time you are asked for a response and the unit is prepared to "hear" you. It is about a second too long, and I end up repeating my answer sometimes. However, with a little patience, I'm getting good results. (BTW, this unit doesn't seem to have any SIRI like personality to it.)3. Anti-theft feature is no deterrent. A person bashes your car window in to get your GPS, and then they can't sell it because it's locked. That doesn't exactly do YOU any good, does it? I don't leave it in my car anymore, since hiding my last one under the center console didn't work. I have no idea what Garmin can do about it, but maybe their clever engineers can come up with something.4. Hands-free calling isn't great. The microphone and speaker just don't cut it.Conclusions:I haven't had any freeze-up issues, so I think the problems others reported were fixed in a software update. It's a quality GPS and the new screen and size are great. This could be faulty memory on my part, but this unit seems to have some accuracy issues with its voice and routing instructions. I rarely had any issues with my older 785, but I've been mis-directed at least twice in my first two months with this unit.I'm reducing my rating from 5 to 4 stars. Routing and verbal instruction accuracy are the most important things, and this unit seems to have taken a slight step in the wrong direction. Pun intended.

Incremental Improvement
I purchased my Nuvi 3790LMT about two weeks ago, replacing an older 770 that died. I am pleased with it -- it is an improvement over the 770, but it is not a huge improvement. Detailed comments, in no particular order:* It is too hard to push buttons. Unlike the 770, where a quick, sharp touch with my fingertip was enough, this requires more of a press with the fleshy part of the fingertip. It's awkward while driving, and that's where it should be easiest. Likewise, their button-sensing algorithm is not good enough. I press an on-screen button, the button lights up recognizing the press, I remove my finger and the button press is ignored -- apparently I didn't touch long enough. On the flip side, it's also too *easy* to press buttons. I tried using it while hiking and carried it in my breast shirt pocket and when the screen faced in, every few steps it touched my skin through my shirt and registered a button push.)* I read many complaints in advance that the display was not bright enough in sunlight or that reflections on the shiny screen made it hard to use. It's not quite as nice as the 770, but I did not find this to be a problem.* The speaking voice seemed clearer -- this is probably due to the speaker on the suction-cup holder.* The pseudo-3D-flying display wastes space with a useless blue "horizon" band at the top. There aren't enough pixels to waste!* Likewise the readouts -- speed, direction, etc., were a bit too big with a bit too much whitespace. Pixels are precious!* The green/yellow/red cars to indicate traffic ahead are just about useless. Traffic ahead *where*? What does it mean to me? And I've been stuck in heavy traffic with it blithely green.)* OTOH, I've quickly grown to like the addition of traffic info to the routing. I haven't used it enough to be certain, but it appears to successfully use traffic info to improve routing. I have particularly noticed that a patch of heavy traffic does not seem to change the estimated time of arrival, indicating that it has already been factored in. I'm cautiously pleased, so far.* OTOOH, I still dislike the tendency to not take minor roads -- both the 770 and the 3790 try to stick to main roads too much.* The best single new feature IMO is what I call the "auto-zoom". As I drive the zoom automatically goes from high resolution showing me just the next few hundred yards when approaching a turn to lower resolution showing me miles on a long straight stretch. This gives an optimal view nearly all the time. This is a huge win for me while driving and eliminates most of the poking I had to do with the 770. I like this *a lot*!* I also like the pictures of many highway exits. Without that (like on the 770) it was easy to be confused about the scale and pick the wrong exit. Nice feature!* I wish that the display was a bit more configurable. I'd like to lose the traffic indicator, but I'd like to include a time-to-destination along with direction, arrival time, and elevation.* Speaking of elevation, it seems to be pretty wonky some times. My house is about 320 ft above sea level, but sometimes it will show up as 100 or 500 and only very slowly settle down to right. Once when walking at 20' elevation it read 500' and took twenty minutes to decide I was near sea level.* Sensitivity seems worse than the 770. It seems to be unable to find satellites in cases where the 770 had no trouble. This is not a big deal, but I rather expected improvement, not degradation.* The voice command feature is a mixed bag. It worked pretty well except when it failed altogether. With addresses, everything has worked well *except* cities. I have a 100% record of getting absurd cities. I'll say "Cambridge" and it will come back with a guess of "Nahant". I'll say "Somerville" and it will guess "Wilmington". This is not my fault, since if I say "1000 Poplar St", it gets it right 95% of the time first try. States have been good, also. But cities are so bad it's unusable for entering addresses while driving.* Nor am I impressed with the limited set of "popular" places voice command serves up when you want to navigate to a place. Definitely pretty weak, there. On the whole, I'd rate the voice command feature a B- at best.* People complained about the case feeling flimsy. Yes, it feels a lot less solid than the 770, but it's also a lot lighter. Not an issue, for me.* The added resolution of the screen was nice.Bottom line: Definitely an incremental improvement over the 770. Would I buy it again? Yes.Notes after nearly six months:* Voice command definitely isn't worth having. It usually fails -- badly -- to recognize cities (though it gets other things right most of the time) and it decides that random noise is a command about once every three hours. I've turned it off.* The traffic feature is a mixed-to-positive bag. It definitely works and I use it, but it has two serious flaws. First, it seems to take 5-10 minutes to get traffic information, which doesn't help me much because my main use is to choose between two alternate routes home, and I have to make that choice immediately upon leaving the parking lot. But unless I sit and idle for a while, it won't know which way the traffic is better.Secondly, it doesn't seem to know about traffic off of the main roads and during rush hour always gets far too optimistic about back streets compared with highways. I'll start with a 35 minute estimate of my drive time (the time with no traffic) and 5-10 minutes into my commute it will jump to 40-50 minutes once it gets traffic reports. And half the time it will take an hour because it directed me along clogged streets.A minor flaw may also be related to sluggish updates. I'll be on the highway creeping along at 10 mph and the indicator will be green "no traffic problems".None-the-less, in spite of that, I'm comfortable with the unit and feel good about the purchase. But I wish they'd do the last 10% of the engineering!)Update, two years later (April 2013): It may be my imagination, but I believe that the places database has gotten markedly worse. (I update regularly.) I'm now getting maybe a 50% success rate finding things that are definitely there. I have to call the object database Not Acceptable. The unit has also developed a habit of telling me to get off on an exit ramp, go to the top, cross the road and then go down and rejoin the road I was just on. Not Good! It's still valuable, but it feels like they've sort of started just to mark time with their products.

Lots to Like
This is my second one, as my first one was stolen. I guess that means I liked it enough to buy it again? Overall a great unit. My biggest beef is the microphone. People can barely understand me when I speak to them when I am driving. Also, the voice prompts can be a little ridiculous at times. The latest software update has been a huge improvement. Map updates could be more accurate, but after owning a Tom Tom, I am much happier with the Garmin. The free map updates rock!I also had trouble updating my maps, and contacted Garmin. They were very helpful and resolved the issue to my satisfaction.

great except...
I was expecting a choice of routes to come up sort of the same as what I get with googlemaps.Often the route it wants to take is either less direct or takes small roads - even my car gives options like"most direct" Fastest, and most economical (speed based) On the positive side, the voice command is great ,the phone is great and the picture outstanding- the sleek package is another bonus- I have friends with phones this size.

Excellent GPS
Works fine for me. I use it in N.America and all of Europe. Garmin service is somewhat cumbersome though, especially if you live in Canada.Try to find a protective case, since the screen is somewhat breakable and I had problems getting it repaired.
