Q: Can this device also do the older 8 mm film?

No, this only does Super 8 not Regular 8. I have digitised 16,000 feet of Super 8 film (about 18 hours) with one of these machines. Saved a lot of money compared to sending to a company to digitise. I am now editing the raw footage through Final Cut Pro. Good results - very happy with the machine but for Super 8 only.

Can you tell us more about what you are seeing? I had no problems with mine, without any upgrades. What do you mean by "they will not capture"? Any error messages?

Q: Does the unit depend on the film sprockets to advance frame by frame? Or is it fed in another way?

Yes, it feeds the film with sprockets, just like a movie projector. It uses the sprockets for frame by frame, as well as fast forward and rewind. Once the film has finished processing, it can be rewound directly reel to reel.
