You Too Can Rescue A Dog Breed Of Your Choice -- Just Be Sure That You Know What You Are Getting Into.
We rescue/rehabilitate/train Irish Wolfhounds. About 20 years ago it would have been unheard of for new owners to give up their $1,000.00 plus dogs -- especially as puppies. But now for various reasons, which can include buying something they've always wanted, not understanding what they are getting into, or because of a change in circumstances, younger IWH's are being put up for adoption. This year we have rescued two hounds and refused two others, all under the age of 17 months. Rescuing/adopting an IWH reminds me of Forrest Gump talking about his box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.One of the first physical problems we notice is the tartar buildup (or yellowing) on their teeth. Evidently many owners don't understand how important dental hygiene is for a hound's quality of life. This is easily fixed by buying either raw femur beef bones or natural white knuckle bones. Since we are usually trying to sort out their diets and/or food allergies, we always start with white knuckle bones. We avoid the barbecued/colored bones since they stain just about everything they touch, especially since our IWH's live with us in our home. Outside might be another story but any flavoring could prove to be problematic as far as potential allergies. It is really amazing how quickly these bones can eliminate any tartar build-up. You must exercise caution when giving any dogs something to chew. Occasionally pieces can break off and be swallowed by an enthusiastic dog so it is very important to supervise your dog(s) when giving them anything to chew or play with. Chew toys thought to be indestructible often aren't. It never ceases to amaze me what strong aggressive chewers are able to accomplish once they put their minds to it. Some Irish Wolfhounds are "shredders", tearing up rugs, doggie beds, boxes, pens, or just about anything within reach. We've had good luck with these Redbarn Natural White Knuckle Bones. Our hounds get to chew on them from 10-15 minutes every day before we pick them up. Anything longer and they get bored with it so the bones typically live to see another day. While we prefer to use raw bones instead, these are a good way to get your dog's tartar buildup under control. After their food allergies are sorted out, feel free to give the raw bones a try.

So Good, But Consider Yourself Warned!
First of all, for those of you that haven't purchased these in the past, be forewarned that they are enormous and not for a dog that doesn't love to chew. They are hard, heavy and will break your toe or foot if your pooch carries and drops them nearby, like ours does (quite loud as well). That said, they are excellent for heavy, strong chewers. They look like the skull of a medium-sized dog (50-70 lbs) and takes weeks for most dogs to get through. Here are pros and cons:Pros:1. Best chew product in terms of longevity, little to no smell and minimal residue while chewing (crumbs/pieces)2. Take weeks or longer for most dogs to get through unless non-stop, serious chewer3. Appear to be effective for cleaning teeth4. Our dog loves most of them (see below)Cons:1. Bit expensive but not when you compare the alternatives and buy the multi-pack as I have seen these in retail stores for $10/each or higher.2. Sometimes our dog quits on one of them for whatever reason -- maybe smell, taste, etc. Happens maybe once out of 10-15 of them but you can also try soaking in a broth or rubbing on it. No idea why this occurs as most often he loves them.3. Hardens stools -- can't imagine this is only our dog as the more he eats the harder his stools become -- and I mean seriously hard. So base your allowance of consumption on your animal's experience and go slowly. Luckily these take a while to get through so easy to control.4. Heavy like a gold bar -- seriously -- when our dog has dropped these on a tile floor they can crack/chip the tile. Imagine how that might feel on your foot or toes. We get a kick out of it as when he picks it up and walks over to us all legs get lifted but if you don't pay attention, dare I say you may end up in a walking cast. All in all, we have tried every product out there and these along with CET chews are a winning combination. These for the long haul and CET chews for dental health and short-burst treats.Enjoy!

Awesome and keeps the dogās attention
We have a 110 lb pitbull who is a very powerful chewer. He has a jaw deformity, where his lower jaw is about 1 inch shorter than his upper jaw, so the vet warned us his teeth will suffer as he gets older if not kept clean. Unfortunately, he also has a very weak stomach, so greenies and yak chews are out. He could care less about Nylabones. Luckily, these bones do not upset his stomach and he chews them down to nothing over a period of a couple of weeks. He also loves Gorilla Ware Wood chews and we buy him those in the biggest size (which is about the size of a small cat). He chews those down to nothing as well. His teeth are gleaming, there have been no issues with chunks coming off.

Company can't count!
I've bought knuckle bones for my dogs in the past. They love them. It's not easy to find the white ones, so I was especially pleased to find these at a good price AND that it's for five bones. I have 5 dogs! I received my package of these bones. They are huge. Very nice, clean, nothing weird growing on them, perfect. Except: THERE WAS ONLY FOUR IN THE BOX!!!! Come on! I don't care how gigantic these bones are. I was supposed to get five! Can no one count??? Through Amazon I was able to find a phone number for Sweetener, the seller. I called. I left a message. And.....(insert cricket chirping) nothing. No response. Can you imagine handing all your kids a new toy, except that one quietly waiting kid? Oops, sorry. You don't get one? Right. You'd break his heart! And that's what happened here. The fifth dog looked like he was gonna cry.So, my dogs do enjoy the bones, which I'm sure will last a long time. Sure, these bones are super duper large. But the description says FIVE bones. I really just wanted what I paid for.
