From the Tony-Award winning director of Les Misrables comes the intimate new musical DADDY LONG LEGS. Based on the classic novel which inspired the 1955 movie starring Fred Astaire - a beloved tale in the spirit of Jane Austen, The Bront Sisters, and Downton Abbey - this heartwarming Cinderella story about a witty and winsome young woman and her mysterious benefactor has charmed audiences of all ages from Los Angeles to London. Critics are calling it an exquisite gem of a musical, and one of the most enthralling, entertaining and moving love stories on the American musical theater stage.Starring Megan McGinnis (Les Misrables, Side Show, Little Women) and Paul Alexander Nolan (Once, Jesus Christ Superstar, Doctor Zhivago) and based on the 1912 novel by Jean Webster, DADDY LONG LEGS features music and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Paul Gordon (Sense and Sensibility), book by Tony Award and Olivier Award winner John Caird (Les Misrables), and direction by John Caird.

Daddy Long Legs is a delight!
This is a delightful musical based on the original Jean Webster novel. (Ironically, both film versions that I have seen - the Mary Pickford silent film and the Fred-Astaire-Leslie Caron musical - seem incredibly dated.) By sticking to the idea of using only letters from Jerusha to her mysterious benefactor, the musical captures all of the charm and sweetness of the 1912 book.I was fortunate enough to enjoy the streaming of the Broadway show in which Megan McGinnis costarred with her real-life husband Adam Halpin. The male lead on the original cast album is good, but I do miss Mr. Halpin's voice. The director and lyricist of this show also produced Jane Eyre, another of my favorites, and they did just as well on this one. After seeing the show (thank you to whoever had the idea of offering a free streaming version!) I preordered the CD so I could reexperience the pleasure.

The expressive beauty of the story comes through in this soundtrack
I first listened to this soundtrack two months ago and I love it to this day, which is saying a lot for me. I usually listen to an album on repeat for a week or so, then it drifts into oblivion. Not so with this one. I fell in love with this story and listened to this wonderful soundtrack as I read through the book. The music is simple, using only a guitar, piano, and cello; however, it is tastefully done and reflects the story well. The vocals are extremely clear and expressive, and the story carries through very well. There are a few "gaps" in the soundtrack where the story moved forward and there wasn't a song for it (the ones I noticed were between 6 & 7, 7 & 8, 12 & 13, and 14 & 15), but as the soundtrack is 20 songs in length as it stands, this is understandable.Overall, I truly enjoyed this work of art and continue to enjoy it to this day.

I liked our performers better
Experienced live at Pittsburgh Public Theater. 2017. I liked our performers better, but this album is a near adequate subsitute. The music is lovely. I took my mother and grandmother to the show, they loved it. I bought the album as a gift for mothers day and they still listen to it. So the love of this play has continud. For others, I read the source material (epistolary novel) and saw the films Daddy Long Legs and Curly top multiple times. If you haven't seen the stage play, it is very simplistic, only 2 performers. Listening to the audio alone or reading the book will give you a fair sense of what's going on. No special effects, just a simple lovely beautiful score

Surprisingly enjoyable off-Broadway musical
I buy most CD’s of new musicals, including off-Broadway, but my expectations for the listening experience are always lower than for Broadway musicals. The “Daddy Long-Legs” recording has several other features that are usually negatives for me: two-person cast, small orchestra (piano, guitar, cello), and absence of chorus. However, this recording would be on my list of my favorites from 2015. The story, about an orphan whose college is funded by a wealthy young benefactor I return for monthly letters, is certainly novel, and it hangs together effectively within the sequence of songs. The music is lovely and effecting, particularly in the frequent use of duets despite the characters mostly not being together very much in the musical. A handsome booklet includes story, pictures, and lyrics to the songs. Look for this show in one of the regional theaters in your city, it should be worth a visit.

A great off-Broadway musical and a wonderful recording
I was unable to get to NYC to see this live on stage, but I did watch it as it made history by being the first off-Broadway show to stream live on the web. A great story and wonderful music. Loved the lyrics and the melodies. Although the recording has a different male singer than the production I saw, his voice is wonderful as well. It's an amazing achievement for only two actors/singers to do an entire musical, but Megan McGinnis and Paul Alexander Nolan pull it off in this recording. Buy and listen to the soundtrack and if it is staged again, it's worth your while to go see it!

VERY NICE
I saw this musical a while back and fell in love with it. Bought this CD right after that. It's only songs (not spoken parts) but still nicely edited.

Wonderful book adaptation.
I love Paul Gordon's score; the musical is much closer to the source material than the Fred Astaire movie.

Excellent recording of a charming musical
A wonderful two-person musical. Megan McGinnis was associated with it for many years, so this is an authoritative recording. This is not a stage version of the 1950s Fred Astaire movie --- it is more faithful to the original novel.
