Is this hinged in some way to allow a wired charger without unplugging it. If so what's the trick. If not then that's that's dumb?

It's a bit flexible at the end, but the design of the device seems to be intended as a "permanent" installation. It has an adhesive patch to keep it stuck to your phone, making unplugging it from the charging port very difficult. It makes it so you need to have access to a wireless charging device anywhere you might need to charge your phone.
