Fahrenheat FBE15002 Dual Wattage Electric 5120 BTU Baseboard Heater, 1500/1000-watt

Q: I just purchased and set up and indeed the smell is awful. For those who stuck it out, how long until the smell dissipates?

It's been a while since I purchased mine, but I left it on for a couple of hours in my garage before I started using it, and there's no smell at all when I use it now.

Q: Is this on oil filled heater???

By definition of being a hydronic heater it should have some sort of fluid in it as a sealed system.

Q: Can I set the temperature at 45 degrees to keep my garage from freezing? Some heaters won't set that low.

First of all the heater is not graduated in degrees. It just has dots. I guess it would also depend on how large your garage is. Ceiling height and insulation, too. I need three to heat a 10x20 sunroom to keep it in the mid 60’s.

Q: Is there any sort of safety screen for this? I'd be concerned about small things falling into it, or children pushing small toys into it.

There is no safety screen at all on this heater. You may be able to attach a heat resistant mesh on the outside of the heater for little hands/small things not to find their way into the heater. The heating element does sit way back and inferiorly on the heater but without the screen it is pretty easy for curious hands to find their way into it. Hope this helps.
