Epiphone G-400 in Cherry

Awesome starter guitar that can be easily upgraded to sound like a Gibson SG [especially if you can get one used from amazon]
I had the Gibson SG but that was way to expensive for me and I was always worried about damaging or banging that guitar. Instead I got this epiphone G-400 from amazon's used warehouse deal and it arrived MINT! The wood and build is exactly the same as the Gibson SG, the only difference is the pickup. The pickups can be easily replaced with 490R and 498T (got them used from amazon as well). The only thing I needed was a quick connect gibson to epiphone adapter for 30 dollars off Ebay and I was all set. No soldering and now this sounds exactly like a GIBSON SG for half the cost. With that said I prefer the Epiphone G-400 and Gibson SG over the Les PAUL as that thing is so heavy but it sounds exactly the same as the SG as it uses the same 490R and 498T pickups! The wood tones are a gimmick when it comes to electric guitars to make you hand over your cash, its the strings and pickups that generate the sound. If you have doubts look on Youtube for "Cardboard Guitar Stratocaster Fender" and it sounds just like a real wood guitar. The plus with modding a G-400 is you have coil splitting built in which the real gibson can't do and makes the guitar sound more twangy like a fender. You need to make sure you get the 4 wire 490R and 498T Gibson pickup to use coil spliting.Amazing guitar and awesome price!

Buena guitarra y calidad
La guitarra es hermosa, liviana y el color perfecto. La madera del Fretboard es clara, el Nut blanco y el binding del Fretboard es crema. El sonido de los humbuckers es clásico del estilo de la guitarra.

Great guitar - lots of fun to play
This is a really easy to play guitar with a surprising range of tones available, due to the coil tapped alnico pickups. The neck is straight and true, the frets are level, even and well dressed. The truss rod required a slight adjustment to get the action as I wanted it, but this is typical of any mail order instrument. The guitar comes with 9-42 gauge strings fitted. With the 24.75" scale length I prefer 10-46 gauge so I restrung it prior to adjusting the truss rod.Overall, it's a beauty to look at and sounds like an SG should: full and rich with plenty of twang and bite in the top end. Much brighter than a Les Paul. The coil tap gives it a glassy bright sound that is great when clean. The set neck and SG design makes access to the top of the fretboard really easy. Like all SGs it has a tendency to neck dive. I fitted a strap lock to the top horn (like Iommi does) and this makes it better balanced when played standing up.It's a joy to play, and a lot of fun, even when you're not pretending to be Angus or Tony ;-)

Great SG Pro. really having fun with it.
Awesome - cool 72nd Bday gift to myself. ! Sounds great. Just right for my oldies ( early 60's) .Update Dec 6,2017: met a guitarist doing R & B at a restaurant with this same SG Pro. Some tips he gave: it's a well-made guitar, good quality control. I asked him if I need to change its pups. he said if you have the dough and you want to experiment/feel good, sure, go ahead. For him, He didn't change his pups on his SG Pro , altho he did mods on his other guiIars like his epiphone Les Paul whenever he had the dough.Other than strings, what else should I change? He said it's a subjective issue like so many, many mods blablabla about guitars in general. Best is use it as is for some time Altho pros, experts because they already have their likes/dislikes, immediately change this stock guitar according to their preferences. Same with amps/fx. For beginners like me he suggested affordable amps with built-in fx. He said just keep on strumming, after a while, you get its "feel", He said everyone eventually develops his own "feel".He said, If I can afford it, have it set-up by a pro. But I feel like my SG Pro was set up good enough out of its box.Simple first change should be its strings. He said beginners like me go online and research, especially the comparison vids/youtube. At first, I wouldn't really be able to really know, the subtle differences between/among pups. Later , with more experience, I may get to know what sounds good to me. Although, watching online helps, be aware most vids online are actually "sales talk" goading you to buy-buy-buy Also, be aware most imported guitars/accessories/etc. buy fromthe same parts suppliers. So don't get surprised if the bridge on a Sq***, is same as the bridge on a $60 start.Best is to hang-out and personally listen/observe sounds of different guitars/set-ups/amps/etc. In short, his advice to me was stay with my SG Pro as is for some time, then, when I develop my own preferences, do the mods I feel like it. Most of all, don't forget to ENJOY your SG 400 ...

A WINNER!!
A beautiful instrument that plays as good as it looks. These Epiphone SG's have the same look as the original Gibson with a flawless finish and great sound. They're very light and easy to play, and the neck shape is perfect for me.

Love it! Very nice but the neck is a bit wide for my hands. I have medium sized hands for a guy and its kinda uncomfortable but i have this problem with all epiphone guitars. I dont like the neck but besides that the guitar is amazing

With some tweaks - great!
At first out of the box I was massively disappointed...volume controls are terrible - no "fade"...just a complete cut off at about "2". Cheap plastic nut, bad intonation. However I took it to a very reputable luthier and replaced the nut with a bone one. I also got him to chop out the split coil switches and replace them with quality hardware. (If you're playing an "SG" why would you need single coil options anyways?).He gave the guitar a perfect setup and restrung with "8" gauge - my personal preference.Total cost about £120.Have to say absolutely amazed now. Before I had a returns number from Amazon but took the chance to upgrade as I just can't afford a Gibson.Playing for 33 years now, have had Yngwie signature strats, Steve Vai Jems, Charvel, Les Pauls, you name it I've played it.Have to say that finally at 51 years of age I have the perfect guitar. In one - ONE day of having this set up to my liking I'm already a better player.Roll off the volume with the upgraded pots, luvely ACDC rhythm sound, power it up and you get full on Angus "live at Donnington".My advice - if you're prepared to spend an additional £100 for tweaks to suit your taste then buy this immediately.PS the picture is MISLEADING - the version I was sent is the newer model with the fretboard binding.I'm now considering what to do next...P90's maybe? Who knows...wish I had bought something like this years ago....

Great for any level guitarist
The guitar arrived in 1st class condition and on time.I recently played a friends 2010 Gibson sg and fell in love with it, but no way could I afford a Gibson so I decided to have a shot at an Epiphone Sg version for less than a 3rd of the price and I wasn’t disappointed. This guitar actually played great straight out of the box (I had read that the set up is often way off with epiphones) and for me played and sounded better than the Gibson, this guitar also has cool splitting which the Gibson doesn’t and that’s quite a cool extra. The finish and feel of this Guitar is amazing and plays and sounds superb. I would recommend to any level guitarist looking for an amazing guitar at a very good price.

Great guitar!
Very nice guitar. I got it to get AC/DC tones by playing it through a Marshall DSL40c and it works beautifully. It's also a very light guitar, lighter even than my Strat. Came fully set up so all it needed was a quick tuning and off I went. You could spend thousands on a Gibson SG but there really isn't any point when Epiphone can make something just as good for a fraction of the cost.

Epiphone G 400 SG
The guitar arrived before I had arranged, but was delivered to a neighbour which was fine. The guitar itself arrived well packaged and once unwrapped is a lovely looking colour. Nice to play with many tonal differences due to the push/pull pots allowing for coli splitting. Overall, very pleased with the guitar.
