Use Canola oil!
Had the same trouble as everyone else. The top is VERY tight. I suspect this is so it won't fall of when you're pouring 40 lbs of pellets into your hopper.HOWEVER, when I wiped a little canola oil around the rim, the cap popped on with much less effort. I hooked one side of the cap on the bucket then, using even pressure, gradually pressed the sides of the cap down onto the bucket, moving my hands symmetrically in opposite directions. As they began to meet at the opposite side, the usual excess bucket rim began to pooch out. Pressing very firmly, and with a little canola oil as lubrication, the cap popped on.UPDATE: I've had this top for several months now and it has definitely loosened up. I only needed the canola oil the one time. Now the top pops on easily, yet it is tight enough not to fall off when pouring. For that reason, I've increased my rating from four stars to five.

Traeger Bucket lid - great product
This is a great product. Like some of the reviewers have mentioned, the lid does not easily snap on. Then again if it snapped on easily, when you attempted to pour the wood pellets the 20lbs of pellets hitting the lids would force the lid off and all pour out onto the ground. To install this item is similar to mounting a bicycle tire onto a bicycle rim. You need to use/apply a lever to assist. In the case of a bicycle tire using a tire lever or a screw driver. In the case of the Traeger lid I used a screw driver to pry the top over the rim. In regards to the bottom screen not fitting flat into the bucket, true again. If it did fit flat on the bottom the pellets would be right next to the dust that you are trying to separate it from. Using careful force evenly moving around the screen I was able to get it within 3 inches of the bottom then easily fill the bucket with a 20lb bag of pellets. It does bulge the bottom of the container some, but it hasn’t affected the bucket.I used a Home Depot Food Grade bucket.

Required a little work but satisfied
I took a lid package to local HD and tried the fit on a couple of stock 5 gal buckets. Wasn't a perfect fit but it was close so I purchased 3. I soaked each Traeger lid in hot tap water for 5 - 10 minutes and managed to snap a lid on each bucket. I also soaked the bottom of each bucket in hot tap water for 5 - 10 mins and was able to seat the dust strainer flush with the bottom of each bucket. If you look close along the bottom of each bucket you can see the ridge created when I seated the dust strainer.I placed buckets in the garage and let lids remain on overnight. Each now has a very snug fitting Traeger lid and a dust strainer properly seated on the bottom of each 5 gal pellet bucket. Took a little work but very happy with the results! Much cheaper than the 20 lb Traeger tin bucket which never seems to be in stock.

Give these a week or so to break in!
These are perfect for our pellet storage. After reading many reviews I decided to go with the buckets from Home Depot (based on overall quality of the bucket). As previously stated, the FIRST time getting these lids on is fairly difficult. It definitely took some effort to get them on. But after 2 weeks of being on our buckets these pop on and off fairly easily now (even the wife does it without a problem). Both lids work perfectly and we are very happy with them. If you are in the fence about these, I suggest buying them. They will "break in" and be perfect for you!

I doesn't fit "Any 5 gallon bucket"
First off: This doesn't do what it says. I bought two lids. Then, I bought two 5 gallon buckets at Ace for the two lids that I bought. The lids did not fit either of those two buckets or any of the other buckets that I have. The lids were too small. I was able to make it work and that's why I am leaving the review. I used a heat gun to heat all over the lid until it had expanded enough to fit over the bucket. Then I went around the lid edge with the heat gun. I heated it enough to soften it so that the bucket compressed to fit the lid. Now the lid will come off and on with ease and the bucket will fit any of the Traeger lids. If you are willing to do that, this product is good but otherwise, it sucks. Also, they are not stackable. So, remember that.

Works well with official Traeger bucket
After reading all the reviews about how people can't get these lids to fit on most standard buckets, I decided to just go ahead and buy the official Traeger buckets to go with the lids. Everything fits perfectly and I can fit a full bag of pellets into the bucket with some room to spare. My only concern would be that the lid does not appear to be air tight, but I haven't tested it so I could be wrong.

Doesn't work on most buckets
Nice thought process in the design but whoever made this thing didnt have standard buckets in mind. I tried at least ten different buckets and not one fit. Went from food grade buckets to paint buckets to buckets I bought from lowes and ace. Not one fit. And the sifter had to be sanded down to fit in the bucket. Lid to small sifter is to big. Saw a review saying to heat it but I shouldn't have to manipulate a product that's supposed to be made for this very task.

Great Lid. No fit issues.
I was a bit worried when I saw the other reviews about it not fitting on buckets. However I took the advice from one of them and let it sit in the sun for a few hours and then it snapped right on the top of a stock Home Depot bucket. Fit on one side and work your way around. Tight fit but that’s what I want so it does not come off when pouring pellets.
