Size:Queen The Avalon combines the traditional mattress craftsmanship of 8 inches of individually wrapped coils with a soft layer of ventilated foam. Simply run your fingers along the tailored tweed sides or button-tufted upholstery to feel the attention to detail. Hand-stitched tape edges and four-way stretch knit on top help you reap the full rewards of memory foam, keeping your mattress from bowing and supporting you fully every night and every morning. Most important, micro coils sit in 5 zones, adding extra protection and support for your feet, head, and lumbar area, while ventilated foam keeps your mattress fresh and cool. On Catalina Island, Avalon is the gathering place for revelers, borrowing the name from medieval times. For centuries, the name Avalon has endured, and we know this classic mattress will endure as well.

Who Knew Mattress Assembly Could Be Eye-Opening?
Well constructed and heavy mattress. Essentially they have squeezed out all the air so that it can be shipped compressed. It comes folded and rolled up in a heavy gauge cardboard box (about 4.5' high and 2' wide). Inside the box the mattress is sealed in plastic and then shrink wrapped. When removed from the box and unrolled you just cut the plastic and there is an immediate flow of air into the mattress, in a few minutes it has expanded to full size. There has been obvious attention to detail in both design and manufacturing process. If you use a frame more than 6" off the floor a thin foundation is recommended as the mattress itself is very thick. The softness mentioned by others is a bit deceptive. To a heavy person sitting on the edge it appears quite soft but when stretching out along the length of the mattress it seems much firmer and supportive.

Not firm enough
I was in need of a new mattress. Our's was not providing us with the support we required and it was bowing in the middle. I liked the idea of the 8 inches of coil and padding. This is a well made mattress with the stitching. Yet, my issue is that it was not firm enough as I was expecting. It seemed like it in the beginning but after sleeping on the mattress for a few days it was apparent that it was middle of the road in firmness. Kind of like the Princess and the Pea. For someone who does not like a too firm mattress then this may be the one for you but if you are looking for more support then I would keep shopping.

I used to not see much difference in mattresses, and given that's not generally something one changes that often, it is sometimes easy to fail to see improvements / differences as our "technology" and knowledge of sleep needs expands. This mattress is like sleeping in a secure cloud. I felt comfortable and very well rested. It is a bit more money than I would normally want to spend, but comparable to the prices one ends up paying at "discount" stores, for what, so far as I am able to tell, is a much more well made mattress. Sleep well.

Really appreciate the PUR rating, use of wool and comfort level that remains firm yet with more 'give'
For the past couple of years we've been using a memory foam with pillow top mattress - it's been a good mattress but after both of us started getting hip pain, realized it was time to replace it. The hip pain has actually got to the point where it wakes us from sleep simply because the foam packs down at night and doesn't allow sufficient "give". There are plenty of other mattress choices on this site but what really set this apart was the use of natural wool rather than the toxic fire retardant; whenever possible, we've been trying to reduce our exposure to chemicals and other carcinogens. This arrived in a fairly large box and was easy to put in place - literally just unroll it and let it full expand. I'm not a huge fan of the blue siding but it is more than made up for in attention to detail. Solid reinforced stitching everywhere. From the very first I could feel the bit of 'give' from the springs inside yet the mattress is still firm. I was concerned about the odor and having to air this out for a few days but that was entirely unwarranted - there is a slight odor but it's minimal. Comfort level is quite good. Overall I'm VERY pleased.

LOVE this mattress. Amazing combination of wool, springs, and foam. SUPER comfortable and supportive.
Well, we got this mattress to use a a trundle bed in my son's room, so he could have friends or cousins sleep over. When I put it under his existing bed and I laid down on it to try it out though, I was ready to move in myself! When we were previously shopping for a mattress for our parents bedroom, we frequently found spring-only or foam/latex only options. Finally we found a combination of springs/foam/wool that was perfect. I'm so glad we found another option here that uses the same approach.

Too soft and Hot
This mattress is much softer than you'd think and we both felt overly hot. We are accustomed to memory foam and this one has too much give, I could feel even the slightest movement from my husband. If you want a soft mattress, then this would be good for you. The quality is very good. It is just not very firm.
