Mastic will always benefit from being at 'room temperature' before being applied. Use your finger or suitable trowel to 'tool' the mastic. Apply some WD40 to your finger or trowel before 'tooling' to ensure a good finish and no sticky fingers etc.

Can you use a hot air gun to assist it to self level when using it outside to fill a concrete expansion joint

Hi, this is not recommended unfortunately. When used at the correct temperatures, the product self-levels on its own.

Do you need a special gun for the tube to fit into for application?

Yes. Have to buy separately. Sika Barrel Gun for 600ml.
