what is this product used for rooms stairs?

hi johnwe had this type of underlay when we had our lounge hall stirwaycarpet laid. but it cost us twice as much as this for the same underlay and thickness 10mm. we then replaced the carpets in three bedrooms with this undelay and half the price and it is no different. we are very pleased with it. val

I've got a pink and dark grey. Which side should face upwards?

It's not the same as the underlay I used but I would expect to have the colour up ( pink ) as I expect the grey is the foam. If ism right the pink is the layer that holds it together and is thin.Cutting the underlay should be a bit easier if you have it the right way up.I'm no expert so this is just my opinion.
