Best reference for explaining the complicated and somewhat confusing topic of Omega-3 fats
"Make it fun!" is what I heard Dr. Sears say at a conference I attended about Omega Threes recently. His new book takes a complete and fun look at what can often be a complicated and confusing topic - Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids. I have read many, many books about Omega-3s, but this work is not only complete and comprehensive, but it is approachable for the non-technical or non-medical practitioner type that wants to learn more about the essential need of our bodies for Omega-3 fats. Dr. Sears sprinkles his book with some whimsical cartoons and illustrations to help reinforce his points. He's got a way about taking this subject and making it understandable for the common person. If you are thinking of taking Omega-3s for your health, or you have a dear friend or family member that could use a nudge to improve their health, this is the book.Negatives? Well, perhaps some of the scientific biological explanations are not 100% accurate, and generalize some physiological functions to simplify the concepts that Dr. Sears is attempting to get across. Also, Dr. Sears strongly advocates in eating a certain number of servings of Salmon per week. Salmon is truly a marvelous food, but if you study more about fishery science and management, there simply aren't enough salmon in the world for all of us to eat 2-4 6oz servings each week. Farmed salmon are not a solution, because they use other wild-caught fish for their feed. He seems to gloss over the possibility for other fish, like sardines, fresh anchovy, mackerel, herring, and other small fish that are high in Omegas and are much more sustainable and cheaper on a nutritional basis than Salmon. Aside from these two small points, I believe that this book will do much to transform the health of those who take the time to read it.

Great information on a very important topic
There is so much information about Omega-3s out there that I was absolutely confused, especially about DHA and EPA, but kept hearing that it was important for our diet. Well, I am not confused anymore and understand the importance. This book was a good read and amazingly, Dr. Sears was able to take the most complicated scientific information and make it understandable in layman's terms, with some great analogies and illustrations. Most important, it gives a roadmap for getting the right balance of Omega-3s and Omega-6s for all types of people who want to just feel and think better.

Well you never know about the obvious oftentimes. Thanks Dr. O. Mega III
Simple useful book. A must-have Text was well -written, well-referenced and scientifically explained. Never knew that the brain is 60% fat and that liquid, flexible lipids like Omega III is essential for vital organ development. Never knew that all fats are not bad and coconut oil staves off Alzheimer. Now I know and then some. Thanks to "Dr. O. Mega III" (sic)Guess I can now 'live long and prosper' (Old Vulcan saying)!!

Needs a bit of an update.but lots of good info in lay person friendly language
It is a super useful educational source although much has been researched even in the short time since it was written - no mention of algal sources useful for vegetarians or the high ALA in Chia seeds (more than in flax seeds and more easily digested and absorbed. - tastes way better too). The drawings are fun. Lots of good chats, lists and references. If only fish he so highly recommends weren't contaminated just about everywhere and getting scarce.Juliana

Some benefits mentioned here are not significant
As many supplements books, they put benefits of the supplements backed up by scientific researchs but also include no significant benefits according to researchs (like Chapter 8 Help you loose weigth). I recommend you to read the book but also use a second source. I like examine.com (search for "fish oil") to check what benefits are really backed up by researchs.

A Must read
Great concise info. The fish diet is really the way to go. I'm skinny as ever going on 2 years with nearly just fish as my protein...or maybe it's from the Nicaraguan nose candy...idk

Reel this book!
This has been a life-changing book. Increasing Omega-3 fatty acids while decreasing Omega-6's have had a profound effect on my depressive mood swings. One must attain the proper balance -- more fish (salmon) and much fewer fats, etc. Some good books out there. Check your local bookshop or Amazon for some life-saving books on omega-3s and anti-inflammatory diets. Dr. Sears rocks!
