Paddle Steamer to Liner... Portuguese Coaster to Norwegian Tanker (Maritime Heritage) Paperback – 24 May 2010

Bought the book assuming that there would be mention of working on the lower ship show on the cover, the 1939 car ferry "Princess Victoria" as my father was her chief engineer. However the copy received had a different cover and no mention of the car ferry so was rather dissapointed but found the memories very interesting.

This wee book gives a remarkably detailed account of the life of merchant seaman. I now understand a lot more of the conditions they had to endure, and am amazed at their enthusiasm for being on the water. A lot of the technical aspects of sailing are also explained. It is one of these books you cannot put down and considering that the author must be almost 90 years old, his memory for detail is remarkable.

This is a great story of seafaring of a sort no longer possible. The detail brings that era to life.
