Wonderfully simple and useful ! One to keep.
This is one of my favorite small appliance products ever. I got one of these in the 1980s and it lasted me for years and years. I gave it away to charity and have searched for one since then ! I thought I'd get a new one and it would look 'new' therefore better. But it was still working perfectly when I gave it away. I only hope whoever got it, knew how to use it and likes it as much as I did ! I can't find another one now ! LOLAnyway, it's been described in the other reviews but I'll add this: Its design is very simple. You plug it in, sit it on your counter top, lift the lid and pour in a couple mugfuls of water (there is a line to show you how much is two cups exactly). You close the lid, and then you push down the button in front. The light goes on. When the light goes green (if memory serves; it's either that or goes off but either way it's sooo simple to figure out) the water is boiling hot. (By the way, if you are vision impaired -- you can hear the water boiling, and when the sound stops you know it is ready. It is a gentle soothing 'steam' sound). Now, you just put your mug or soup bowl underneath it (there is a stand/base, and the water tank is on top of that) and push the button down. The hot water pours out of the water tank into the soup bowl or mug. It is that simple ! And it really does take two minutes. I've tried boiling water in a microwave; it does not get hot enough. This really does the trick. The water is boiling hot but not bubbling. I never hurt myself with the temperature of this water; you will want to keep small kids away from it though, like you would with any hot water. There is no latch on the lid, so if they pulled it down off the counter the water might come out and burn them. But that isn't likely to happen, because the cord is short. Just push it back far on the counter top. Another safety feature is, it does shut itself off once the water is done boiling. When I ignored it, I would have to boil it again but that's good; I'd rather re boil it than have it totally scalding or simmering all day.The best part is you can use Hot Shot for many things. I made instant mashed potatoes with it, and usually just tea or hot chocolate. It is the ideal appliance for anyone in a small living area such as a dorm or studio apartment. It is even good to have in one's bedroom if you share living quarters. You could have your morning coffee or tea before facing the roommates !If there is a downside it is that it only boils water. You can't heat soup in it but then I like it that way ! I had a hot POT in college and never used it after the first time. I hated cleaning old soup out of there ! It's much easier and neater to just boil water in the Hot SHOT and use instant soup powder in a mug.I had the Hot Shot for a long time and it never needed cleaning inside. But there is an easy to understand user's manual with it, that explains how to clean it out if calcium deposits do settle in from the water over the years. All in all I recommend this with the highest rating. It remains one of my all time favorite small appliances for its ease of use and for its simplicity ! I used it every day ! Also it does not take up much room on the counter top.

100% satisfied with this company
I ordered this for a senior client to replace one she had for years. It works perfect so far. You push the on button, the water heats up, you push the button to release the water in your cup, presto! tea is ready!I told her she could heat water in her microwave but she didn't think that would work!!!! lolI am changing my review three months later because this has stopped working completely. My client is very upset and doesn't know how she will make her tea now as she cannot use her stove. She is not able to use a microwave either.I asked to return it for a replacement and I am hoping this can happen.I am updated this review for the third time because this company immediately sent out a replacement machine for my client. My client was in tears as she did not believe a company could be so wonderful in today's world. I am very pleased knowing my client is happy and can easily make herself a cup of tea when I am not with her. Not an easy task for someone who will be 94 in two weeks! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you SIMS company!!!

Great value; works very fast
I bought this to heat water fast (to heat up bottles of frozen breastmilk) and it works as advertised. The water definitely finishes boiling about 16 oz of water in under 90 seconds.Pros: very simple, very fast, great price, takes up little counterspace.Cons: short cord, a little difficult to drain completely, the dispenser button doesn't seem durable enough, reservoir could be a bit bigger (to hold more water).I've had it for about 4 days now, so it's too soon to tell if it will be durable, but since the parts seem to be simple, there shouldn't be an operational breakdown unless a part breaks. After dispensing what I can, I just leave the top open so the rest of the water can evaporate.

Faster than microwaving!
I love this gadget-- it's my third one! Someone gave me the first, and I saw no point to it...until I used it, and became an immediate convert. Just pour in a cup of water, plug in and hit the button, and voila-- magic! In what seems like seconds you hear it start to steam, and your hot water is ready for tea, coffee, or whatever else you might want to use it for. The only potential drawback I've noticed is that the clearance isn't high enough for a really big mug...but most of mine fit just fine, so I happily use it every day, and just hope they don't ever discontinue this product.

Faulty Power Switch
Yes this is a cheap item, I understand, but it should at least be constructed well enough to last more than 5 hours. I set it up on my desk and it worked great, then the power button got stuck-like and will no longer depress. Its a faulty button. If it would work longer (and lets say I just got a lemon and most do not have this issue) its a great little instant hot water dispenser and it worked fast. It doesn't hold much water (16 oz), but its so instant it didn't really matter.

Great for the office -- AND for those with younger children
I got a Sunbeam Hot Shot about 6 years ago. It had been recommended by someone at work. I used it at work every day (and still do) -- and have since bought another for home. It makes 2 cups of hot water -- and is great for everything including tea, instant oatmeal and hot chocolate. When my daughter was younger, it was great for her because she could make her own hot chocolate or instant macaroni and cheese, and I wouldn't have to worry about her being burned on the hot stove. With the hot shot, you just pour your water in the top and hit the "heat" button. The machine will then shut itself off when the water is hot and you can dispense the water. This is a great product and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants fast, convenient, and safe heating for hot water.

Why didn't I buy it before
A co-worker kept talking about hers and how much both she but also her family loved this thing. She kept telling me that I should get one. I finally gave in and bought two. I am glad I did. It is so practical, so simple and so good. What an amazing time saver. The water boils in no time and I can get a quick cup of tea before I am quite awake. I highly recommend this. ... as a matter of fact a few friends will see this under the tree this Christmas

Fast and easy to use
Great quick little machine. i only wish that the ld was better designed as mine constantly comes off when I use it and is a bit frustrating to put back on (fitting rounded edges of lid into slots on the main body)

Throw away your kettle and get one of these.
I have given these to everyone in my family. They are a must-have in every kitchen. I use an Aeropress coffee maker and with this appliance, I have the perfect cup of coffee in 3 minutes. It takes less than a minute to boil water for a cup of tea too.
