Okay - Just...
I am 57 - nearly 58 - years old. Whether that qualifies me as a Senior or not, I don't know. I certainly feel like a Senior. I have also been using computers (desktops, laptops) since 1995 and getting computers ready for friends so they can use them, giving them basic teaching on how things work and how they can make life easier for themselves when they use them.I am no novice when it comes to computing but I've never had a Tablet or iPad and decided that it would make life a lot simpler for online access for Sports Programmes. I bought a new Tablet running Android 7.0 and ordered this book at the same time, deciding to use it as a manual as I got to grips with learning a rather different concept in the set up.The book has large enough print. It's in colour. It has additional tips in the margins. It doesn't give you too much information on each subject. It even introduces you to some Apps and why you might want them rather than leave the reader to think what might be in the Play Store. However, it does have some major flaws. For one, the author forgets to tell you that oh-so-important piece of info that completes the picture. Take 'Multitasking With Apps'. I followed it through step by step and understood what could be achieved and realised that it would probably be of little use to me but, when I got to the end of the Section, he'd forgotten to tell the reader how to turn the damn thing off! Took me two or three minutes to figure it out.'Working With Text' doesn't tell you how to easily select a large volume of text. I managed to do it in error and still don't know how I got there. And instructions like 'Drag' (where you place a finger on the button, keep it depressed and then move it across the screen) aren't defined. If you know what the word means, fair enough, but some 'Seniors' will get frustrated when they're being instructed to do something that they can't understand. And his insistence to tell the reader to 'Press' something isn't ideal. You don't press anything on a Tablet - you touch. That may sound like I'm being pedantic but tell someone they press an item and they are more likely to use force, thinking there's a switch that needs clicking - and that is more likely to damage the screen.Oh, and reading 'Google Feeds' totally baffled me - it probably is a useful way to group items together into one App but I couldn't make much sense out of the instructions. One day I will probably play around with the concept and get something out of it but the section caused more confusion that simplicity. He also doesn't deal adequately with the Privacy issues and what you're actually doing when you allow an App to know your location, your Contacts' details, your mother's name, the type of dog you own and what Pub you drink at.All in all, the book is a good enough introduction if you can interpret the author's meaning. His chronological treatment of the subject matter isn't great, though - why explain the keyboard in Section 3 when you're inputting text in Section 2 and need to use the keyboard when you first turn the Tablet on? And why put info about Anti-Virus Apps in Section 11?!!! You need to get one on and running when you first access the Play Store. If you want to have some basics about a Tablet running Android (to 7.0) then this is probably decent enough - but it is certainly not for a person brand new to computing. There's nothing better than to sit down with someone and learn face-to-face.
