Well made
I didn't realize just how big a 16" compass was, but I might add that this is very well made. It holds the setting very well and the tip is both sharp and hefty. I can also reason that the tip can be sharpened easily with a 1000 grit ceramic stone.

Like you found it in your great grandpa's toolbox.
Holy smokes - this thing feels like it was made in the 30's and will last 100 years! Heavy guage steel, quality manufacturing. It is heavy in the hand. Not cheaply made. It's large - not best for tight spaces - but otherwise buy this one and use it for life.

Sturdy
Exactly what I was hoping for. Holds a standard pencil. Sturdy enough to last a lifetime for my purposes.

12 inch Pencil Compass
The 12 inch Pencil Compass seems to be very well made. All the screws work well and are pretty snug. The arms are snug and work nicely. The only issue I have with this compass is that a standard size pencil will not fit in the hoop. I don’t really understand how this was overlooked.

Very sturdy device
I was surprised how sturdy this thing is. And having the locking screw makes sure the adjustment will not change.

It's really a good product, it's quite big and very well made. Old fashioned goodness

This Compass is Very Easy to Use and Accurate
I purchased this compass so that I could make full scale 22 inch diameter drawings of a composite flywheel I am designing in order to instruct the technicians who are building the flywheel in the location and orientation of the composite fibers. This project involved making numerous concentric circles on large sheets of vellum or bond paper with accurately spaced distance between each circle. I tried several other compasses with clip-on extensions and they proved too rickety to draw accurate large circles. This compass is exceedingly stiff and strong. Once you set the radius desired, it is not moving and the only inaccuracy is in how the pencil lead wears down. I tried to use a drawing pen but found that it was too sensitive to the angle of the compass arm with respect to the paper surface, and would skip irritatingly. As long as you keep your pencil sharp and tightly clamped in the holder, you can make as many large circles as you like with excellent accuracy.

Works well, but rough finish.
This compass, and I suspect all the other similar one's here are functional, but rough finish. The edges were so sharp I cut my fingers on them. I filed, sanded and polished the steel for a few minutes just to make it usable. Works well now.
