A solid textbook on game design
Fullerton has put together a well-focused and tightly structured textbook that guides readers through all relevant stages of game design. The chapters have a sharp focus, are clearly written, and contain useful exercises and further readings. Arguably one of the strongest elements are the sidebars by industry insiders, which provide reality checks and inspiration. I only had minor gripes, for instance that the digital version of the third edition is missing all cross references, or that the writing could have been checked better for industry jargon (what is it with design folks always 'planning out', 'mapping out', 'building out', etc? What ever happened to simply 'planning', 'mapping', or 'building' something?). But these are negligible caveats in an overall solid publication that I am more than happy to recommend to my own Games Studies students.

Awesome book, great for teaching Game Design
For me, it's the second best game design book, being A book of lenses the only better.I find Game Design Workshop easier to understand and the workflow the book presents is ideal for teaching.

The book made it in time, however there were some corners where it looked like it may have been hit by a blunt object.

Full of great exercises to help you design games!
This is an amazing book! If you want to learn about the best game designers and if you want exercises to help you generate game ideas, buy this book. It's a game designing curriculum that is helping me create an educational video game for my graduate research project.

Good Textbook, Greate for Indies
For students going through a multi year degrees. This can be one of your touchstone book you keep throughout your career. Practical advice and exercises for all without being too theoretical. For indies, it a great set of practical ideas to 'stress test' your design and to explore its edges for new opportunities in game play.

Don't Buy the eBook Version :( It is not kindle material
I bought this because I loved the second edition and I use it in my courses. This time I decided to buy the kindle version since I can bring it everywhere but I had two bad surprises.Bad surprise #1: It cannot be downloaded on the kindle touch! :(I am not sure why but the book cannot be downloaded on eink kindles which is very bad since I can read on the basic kindle for hours but I cannot stand the usual color display for that longBad surprise #2: the references to the pages are missing. The book is formatted in a rather traditional way with numbered pages etc. The kindle version is basically completely equal to the printed version which is good (and it is probably the reason why it does not download on a kindle touch). At the same time the page numbers in the text are missing. The typical reference is reported as "[...] in page , we show [...]" it is like they eliminated the page numbers that would be present in the printed version. But this is weird since in contrast with the typical kindle book, this one has the "traditional" page numbering so the reference would still hold.

First in application. Second in theory!
Great for a beginner like me. Rules of play is the only other book that could top this but that's only in theory.

Read better books on this topic, PDF format is a huge problem
I liked the excerices throughout the book but I think that it isn't well organized. Some of the "interviews" are disruptions the flow of the book and some are just not very interesting.I think it's an OK read but only if the format is regular and not a PDF which makes it so much harder to get through.

Covers pretty much everything you need to know when starting out
If you only buy one book about game design this should be it. Covers pretty much everything you need to know when starting out. Also contains really interesting interviews with different game designers.

Nice book.
Nice book..but this book is not for people who are reading for fun. Consider this book if you are doing a course in game design
