How many additional handsets can be used with this phone? - more than one?

Although we got one with one handset which is all we need, the booklet says "up to 6 handsets can be registered to the base unit". Don't know if this answers your question but it's the only one I have.

What is the volume, for comparison, of a standard, non-amplified cordless phone. Is 40 db double? 50% increase? etc..

This phone solved all my hearing challenges I had with regular landline phone. It lets me comfortably put handset against my ear with hearing aid on. Sound is clear, words easy to understand. This model is recommended for moderate loss. I bought the KX-TGM450S model for severe loss. I don’t need all those extra decibels now but may in the future. I love the phone. Also love the slow talk button when I need to use it.

Can I order a additional handset

I would like to order either 1 or 2 additional handsets for my new phone. so far I have no handset with it.

What is a digital answering machine? Can I record a message for the answering machine when people call me?

Yes, you can record your message. A Digital answering machine is just an answering machine connected to a landline with the ability to store recorded messages to an internal memory chip. Don't get hung up on the word digital. It's just an answering machine like you're used to. To record your message on your handset you push menu then type in #302, select yes, then record up to 2 minutes of a message then press stop.
