Awful taste, goopy texture, solid ingredient list
I'm a big fan of protein powders for use in smoothies and other miscellaneous cooking endeavors, but this is my first product that is specifically marketed as a weight gain mix. If this is what all weight gain powders are like, though, I'm not sure I'm a fan. Let me start off by saying that a full serving of the vanilla powder (which comes in at 1280 calories and 100% of one's RDI of protein) includes 7 scoops of the powder. Well no kidding there's so many calories! Nearly any protein powder could be classified as "weight gain" if its serving were 7 scoops! Because there are so many scoops that go into one serving (which is recommended as mixed with 24 oz. of water), the consistency of the smoothie turns out to be extremely goopy and thick. My first smoothie was so thick that I couldn't use a straw. Since then, I cut down the amount of scoops I use per smoothie and usually add additional liquid or ice cream. Another reason that I limit the scoops is because the vanilla flavor is absolutely terrible. It's an overtly sweet taste that does not go down easily. If I want to eat this powder (and enjoy it), there better be something else strongly flavored in the mix (like peanut butter or LOTS of ice cream) to make the vanilla taste at least bearable. With my complaints out of the way, I do have to give this powder a solid thumbs up for its ingredient list. With barely over 10 ingredients (and all of them recognizable), at least I feel comfortable putting this in my body! Especially since the blends included are made up of things such as quinoa and sweet potatoes. However, despite the fact that I'm a fan of the ingredients in this powder, I'm not much of a fan of any other qualities. I'd be interested to see how the flavor changes with another variety (such as chocolate or strawberry), but because the powder comes at quite a hefty prices ($65 at the time of this review), I don't think that's a gamble I'd be willing to take. With everything being said, if you're looking for a high calorie protein powder that has a solid ingredients list and you don't care about the taste or consistency, then I think this might be a good investment for you; otherwise, you might want to give this powder a hard pass and keep shopping around.
