Q: Will this work with a current 5k imac. my old intuos 3 will not. the drivers are not available.

Yes. I have a an iMac retina. You are correct that Wacom no longer offers a current driver for Intuos 3 on their website; however, go to the app store and look for ConnectMy Tablet. this app developer has bridged the gap and created an app that gives these wonderful old classics in use. I have my Intous 3 on my iMac and my Cintiq Companion Hybrid on my laptop. the app from the app store is very actively developed. I get an update about every two months as they bring more old Wacom classics out of dust bins. Note that the steps to follow in that app are very important. I just upgraded to Mohave about two weekends ago and needed to re-run the app for the new OS. There was an added step or two this time due to Apple adding additional security - new steps where you specifically approve drivers vs the more automatic process in past operating system releases. The app walks you right through it, though. It was easy even if it had several steps. Just in case this post is not dated, this infomration is current as of Sep 2019.

Q: Does this work with windows 8.1? And please don't just tell me it's sold out.

I would say that it should and will work fine with Win 8, as the Legacy Drivers for this tablet on the Wacom website do include Win 8 in the listing.http://us.wacom.com/en/support/legacy-drivers/

Q: Is this tablet compatible with Adobe software that I have purchased separately?

Yes it will work once you install the correct driver available on the Wacom site.
