Seek and ye shall find.
The content: I had to keep reminding myself that this is a collection of texts from over 800 years ago. It feels like it could have be written today, with all that we have to deal with in modern times.Yes, it's written for true monks looking to live a hermit life. But with lockdowns, and tragedy everywhere I believe we all need to learn how to unplug from the matrix and upload to God. This will teach you how to do that. From how to moderate eating, to how to work and sleep. This is a valuable Life guide to teach peace in Christ. And yes. You will learn how to pray. The Material: As another review pointed out, this is not a leather bound heritage quality book. It's a mass market paperback without a wax coating.I preserved mine with Renaissance wax and it was good to go.Conclusion: This book is worth its weight in gold, and I'm glad that it's made of paper so I can afford it.

A Breath of Fresh Spirit
Absolutely loved this book! Gave it to a friend afterwards. It's filled with the deep spiritual insight and wisdom of the Eastern Church which the West so desperately thirsts for these days. If you've been through lots of repetitive Christian literature without finding what your soul longs for, give this a try. Many have been lifted to God by its grace.

On prayer of the heart
The Philokalia is the most sacred text for the Orthodox Church excepting the Bible. In this Book, there are glimpses of Volume five (the complete text) which is yet to be published in english but available in French, Russian and of course Greek. The beauty of "Philokalia: On prayer of the Heart" is unsurprisingly magnificent. The potential for self discovery in this book is so uplifting all should read it if you so choose."On Prayer of the Heart" seems to be out of print which is an incredible shame. The complete Texts:The Eastern Orthodox church has had the English translation of Volume 5 for some years now. Hopefully one day the Church will consent to publish it.The published Volumes of the Philokalia (the complete text) one through four are available and all should be encouraged to consider acquiring these magnificent books.

Inspiring book
It is difficult to digest, but I enjoy reading the book. It is deep and it breaks down ways to lead life and have intimate relationship with God and man …the power of humility, the power of silence, holiness, isolation

Writings from the Philokalia by E. Kadloubovsky & P. Sherrard
It is excellent for one reason, and that is because it is the only source of some of the readings from the fifth volume of the Philokaia that has yet to be translated into English. I am in the process of translating this fifth volume into English from the Greek and found that the writings in the book were translated from Greek to Russian then in this book into English. In the course of going through so many languages the essence and spirit of the original Greek was lost in this volume. This is evident also in comparing the translations done by one of the authors (Philip Sherrard along with Kadloubovsky) with the translations done by the same author (along with G.E.H. Palmer and Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokela) in the four volumes of the Philokalia done directly from the Greek. Nevertheless it is a worthwhile book and quite suitable for those interested in generally becoming acquainted some of the writings of the early Christian Fathers, but not for scholars of theology who should read the more complete Philokalia.

Spiritual seekers are advised to proceed with honest caution.
Excellent book however probably should have asked my spiritual father about it before buying because he said not to read it as it is an advanced manual of the spiritual life and I am just setting off down that path and am not a monk.If one has never hit a nail with a hammer and wishes to become a carpenter one should not begin with a master cabinetry manual but with woodworking 101 and work from there. That is my experience with this book. But with writers of this illustrious caliber I can't give it less than full marks.

The simplicity of the Jesus prayer
A wonderful book about the prayer of the Heart and is a real inspiration especially when read with The Way of the Pilgrim. Be careful, however to buy this version by E. Kadloubovsky & G.E.H. Palmer as some of the more recent 'potted' versions miss the salient details. I think it is important to understand the complexity that sits behind this simple prayer and this book delivers in an easy to read and compelling format.

Seek and ye shall find.
As a follower of Meister Eckhart I have searched for some time to reconcile his writings with the Philokalia. Such a large and convoluted tome when searching for only certain aspects seemed futile. That is until being lent a hard-to-find copy of this book. The authors undertook a herculean task of extracting the contents from the whole works. Although hard to find I managed to obtain a second hand hard back copy. Strongly recommended for all seekers of deeper prayer. Now meditation is becoming mainstream albeit under the title of mindfulness, it is unlikely that this book would appeal to that market.
