Of course it depends on the size of your backpack and the direction of the rain. In a moderate rain without strong wind, your backpack (and you) should be fine. :)

Q: According to the diagram, this umbrella becomes a water-collection ‘bowl’ so as it fully opens...the collected downpour is dumped on victim?

No. What you do is, as you close the umbrella, it goes up and the water is collected inside the "bowl" then you just dump out the water. Just shake out the umbrella and it stands with the open end downward. That way water droplets that are left on the umbrella will drip down onto the ground or floor. It's very cool. I have two. Highly recommend. There are videos online that makes it easier to understand.
