Only 4 stars - would be 5 if it had a built-in battery
Many of Godox flashes have built-in batteries and usb-c charging. This one does not. Due to the lackluster amazon search, this flash shows up if you search for rechargeable on camera flash even though it isn't. If you want to not have flashes ruined by leaky batteries and are looking for a rechargeable flash, look elsewhere. That said, it still gets four stars as it makes for a nice slave flash and universal on camera flash. As a slave flash the optical slave is reliable and the recycle times are great. The flat sides provide options for setting it on a shelf or table or just about anywhere. This is a nice addition if you just want a nice quick fill light while run & gun shooting. The light quality is decent but as a slave gives you options for bouncing light that you normally wouldn't have which can give you nice soft light. As a direct on camera flash, it doesn't tilt or rotate and doesn't sit high - so you get basic on camera flash photos like you would with any other on camera flash. But if that's what you're looking for this is a great little flash for the price.

Diminutive in Size, Big on Power. Handy to Have on Hand.
When Godox said “mini flash” they weren’t joking; the iM30 is a tiny, albeit, sophisticated fully manual hotshoe camera flash. The handy little iM30 easily slips into a pocket, or anywhere else the user can fit their hand. Moreover, a manual flash can make for a very quick working methodology, much quicker than the all-automatic methods. It just comes down to a basic knowledge of the practical relationship of aperture, ISO, shutter speed and the inverse square law as it pertains to flash photography. For determining the proper exposure, the guide number value can be used; Guide number = distance x aperture. From that little formula it’s possible to calculate the exposure either as a distance or an aperture. It’s likely that most users won’t worry about a GN, shooting and adjusting until they are satisfied with the histogram or the picture on the cameras monitor. But if an understanding of the basics of flash photography is desired, the Godox iM30 provides the opportunity.Provided in the user manual for the iM30 flash is a “practical Table.” By manipulating the little formula above, it will be found that all of the information in the two charts is determined by its use. So, if Guide No. = distance x aperture, then aperture = Guide no./distance. Distance = Guide no./ aperture. All of the information in the practical table is based on the use of those three iterations of the guide number formula. So, for example, if the guide number is 100, and the user determines they’re about 15ft from the subject, then the usable aperture would be 100/15 = about F6.6. And so forth. Bear in mind, as the chart makes clear, that the guide number will vary with ISO.The little iM30 flash incorporates 7 levels of power adjustment using its dial. For all practical purposes, the 7 power levels can be thought of as a 7-stop range of adjustment; each halving of power equals a stop. In addition, ½-stop hash marks are laid out in between. The flash also incorporates an optical sensor and settings for S1 and S2, allowing the flash to be used as a slave; when either is selected, a small LED lights next to its delineation. S1 tells the flash to fire concurrently a with a master flash. When the master flash is in TTL mode, the S2 setting tells the iM30 to ignore the TTL’s pre-flash and fire on the masters second, and main flash. The only less than desirable feature of the flash is that it doesn’t utilize a built-in, rechargeable battery. Instead, it requires two AAA batteries. How long a set lasts will be dependent on what levels of power are used and how many times. Suffice it say that a spare set should be kept on hand. Used at full power, the iM30 takes about 6-seconds to recycle. Set to 1/64 power, it recycles instantaneously. In practical use, the iM30 flash is a handy light source for adding catchlights in the eyes of outdoor subjects or adding a touch of contrast on cloudy days. It could also serve as a fill light, and likely has useful utility for macro photography, where its power becomes more significant in the scaled down environment. Overall, it’s handy, fun little light source with very useable power.

won't work well with big lenses, great for travel and easy to use
The media could not be loaded. This flash is a great small flash with a couple of reservations. Due to the size of this flash, it's great for travel. It works well with small pancake lenses. I like that I can adjust the power of the flash. At the full power, the cycle time is about 4 seconds. This flash works with any standard cameras. I use this with A7c and ZV-E1. This flash is great for travelling and beginner. Even for a pro how wants to travel with absolutely small flash, this is fine with certain limited conditions. The design of this flash makes this flash limited in certain situations.Reservations:1. This flash will have a dark spot if the lens is big. Note my picture there is a dark round at the bottom right corner. The flash gets blocked by the lens.2. The flash can't be directed to the ceiling.3. This flash uses 2 pieces of AAA batteries.

Great universal flash
This is yet another great high quality flash from Godox. It's universal with almost any camera and perfect for adding some fill on a sunny day outside or in a studio along with other lights. It's awesome that this can work in tandem with other flashes by toggling the pre-flash setting. The recharge time between flashes is almost instant on full power and even just slightly below full power it is instant. This is powered by battery but it lasts forever and getting back to full power can be done in a second rather than waiting for a charge. The strengths of this little flash are it's portability, powerful brightness, and simple design. With only a dial and a few settings there's nothing confusing to it. Though I will say it's a bit of a shame it's too small to put any high quality modifiers on. It limits this flash to being very harsh, though it gives that perfect disposable camera flash quality as a main light. This light is versatile, inexpensive, and easy to use. I know I'm glad I added it to my kitchen, and it doesn't impact the capacity of my bag at all. I highly recommend this flash if your camera doesn't have a built in one or need something more reliable and powerful!
