Broken Glass
I am a Soda Stream fan and have used models with plastic bottles for several years. I was excited to upgrade to the Penguin Soda Stream and bought the unit for my husband for Christmas. A few months later I noticed one of the bottles chipped on the top. A month after that, using the other bottle, I found a shard of glass in the bottom of a drinking glass from the second carafe! I contacted Amazon to request a (lower cost) replacement using plastic bottles, and to my disappointment, I learned that their return program had expired in April for this purchase. The secondary merchant, Savvy Sales, stated that they were no longer in business. I contacted Soda Stream, and since the unit was not bought through an authorized dealer (Savvy Sales), they will either replace the broken carafes or let me turn it in and get 50% on my next purchase. I was unaware of the issues associated with not buying from an "authorized" dealer....so all I can say, is be careful and examine the top of the glass carafes after each use and buy from an authorized dealer.

Frivolous but fabulous
Truly, it is hard to justify this purchase in the grand scheme of life. We WERE drinking too much Pelligrino (again, did we need to do this or simply want to...) and the glass recycling was out of control. We have great filtered water so again, was this absolutely necessary??? Not in the least. Having said that, we love it. We've found that pushing the penguin's beak is just fun but the results are pretty outstanding. We haven't figured out yet how long the cartridge will last but we typically make 2 to 4 bottles a day. It takes time to figure out the degree of carbonation but once that's done, we have each individualized our bottles. I didn't drink a lot of soda before, but now I don't even want it. I also haven't experimented with the flavors and don't see the need. Lastly, I'm not sure I ascribe to the plastic vs. glass concerns but I do appreciate their longevity as long as my husband doesn't drop one on the tile floor.

Great product, BUT THEY LIE ABOUT THE PRICE OF AIR!
This is a marvelous product, but there is one gaping problem. They tell you that to replace the CO2 canister will only cost you the price of the air. Last time I checked, CO2 does not cost $15! So yeah, they give you a WRITTEN PROMISE WITH THE PRODUCT that is a COMPLETE LIE!So if you want a wonderful carbonator, and don't care about the cost of replacing air, go for it. If you want to save money on carbonated water, the cans at the store ain't any worse.

Useful but issues with design
For those of us who don't like HFCS and like to adjust carbon dioxide content and cheaper than going to store for sodas unless there's a big loss leader. Two big issues: one, the glass unit seems fragile and I'm afraid constantly of it breaking, especially since sometimes the latch to close does not fully engage. In addition, the bottle compression caps sometimes get stuck and yet other times they loosen with time and don't hold the gas in.

Great buy if you drink lots of carbonated water
I'm pretty happy with this purchase. I love carbonated water and used to go through a litre a day, buying tons of Perrier, and carrying and throwing out tons of glass bottles. Well no more. The Penguin is a really convenient device that will carbonate a full bottle of water within seconds.Pros:- Quick and convenient to operate. I can charge up a bottle of water in under 10s.- Cool design - looks great on any counter- Glass Carafes are quite nice.Cons:- Kind of pricey. But in my opinion worth it, given the stylish look of the device and the glass carafes.- Soda stream CO2 tanks are quite overpriced. Like other Sodastream carbonators, you must buy the tanks from Sodastream as they have a proprietary valve. Between me and my girlfriend we go through a carbon tank in about a month. Instead They are about $18 at the local hardware store. Prior to buying this, I would recommend going to the Soda stream website and checking if you have nearby stores which sell or exchange these. There are also 3rd party attachments that you can buy online that will allow you to use much cheaper standard CO2 tanks. I haven't tried this yet, but it seems like a great way to save lots of money over the long run.- At first can be a little awkward to open, to retrieve a bottle after charging it. After a while you get used to this.

I would not recommend anybody to buy this
The problem with this product is you can't refill the canisters of seo to an order to buy new ones you have to spend $30

Love It!
I purchased the SodaStream Penguin as a gift for my mom because she is always buying a million sparkling water bottles from the grocery store. She is also not tech savvy. The SodaStream Penguin was easy to set up and is just as easy to use. One reason why I choose this product over some of the other competitors is because of the glass bottles. They are very durable and easy to wash in the dishwasher. My mom is all about convenience and this product allows her to enjoy sparkling water when ever she wants in only a few seconds.
