Love it!
I'm going to try to be as detailed as possible when explaining the 5 star review, especially because this is a fairly pricey hair tool compared to a $30-$40 decent quality straightening iron. I had been using a Chi-type flat iron in various widths to tame my unruly hair for about 15 years, and while the days of flat, board straight hair are over, getting body and a naturally smooth look with a flat straightening iron was a challenge. I rarely even considered curls - that took another tool and more heat, AFTER straightening.. Ugh!! Enter the InStyler Max!There are more pros than cons, so I"ll start with the former: 1) It heats up really fast and gets hot enough to straighten really out of control hair (I speak from experience) 2) The built-in brushes smooth the hair before and after being hit with the heat. Anyone who follows a brush with a flat iron to get smoothness, like I did, knows this is a significant feature 3) The Instyler Max barrel rotates both ways so you don't have to contort your arm to meet the direction of the rotation - a great improvement over the original InStyler and the reason I didn't purchase the original 4) It comes with a heat pad to protect your work surface, although I still wouldn't recommend putting it on finished wood. This thing gets hot! 5) Most importantly, I get GREAT results with this tool! My hair is kinky curly in some places, wavy in others, and so frizzy that no product I have discovered will tame my hair enough to look "fixed". Considerable heat is simply a necessity for me. While it sometimes takes a couple of passes (as is normal according to the directions and no different than a flat iron), this thing gets my hair very straight and smooth while keeping it natural looking. The curve of the barrel and the heated plate between the brushes gives the hair just enough movement to eliminate the dreaded board straight look. If you want more curl, of course that is completely doable too. In the same time that it takes to use a flat iron, I get a MUCH better, more natural, more styled look. I LOVE IT! 6) It comes with a heat guard and a comb to portion hair. I also find the comb useful for cleaning hair out of the brushes. No, mine didn't come with a bag; but, frankly, I would have thrown it away if it had. 7) This thing has a 2 year manufacturer warranty which I haven't read about in other reviews, but I consider to be a huge plus. Believe me, I WILL send this thing back if I don't get two years of use from it. That peace of mind makes me more okay with the price tag. 8) There is a great manual with instructions for getting different looksNow for the cons: 1) Despite the claim that hair cannot get into the rotating mechanism, I have found that's not exactly true. While I don't feel the InStyler pulling them out, I do find the occasional fallen hair stuck in the crevice at the end of the rotating barrel. It's not a huge problem, I just pull them out, but it's not ideal 2) Did I mention that this thing gets HOT? That is a double edged sword - necessary for ease of straightening, but scary. Unless you're flipping your hair outwards, you will need to position the barrel next to the head with the brushes on the outside. Without the heat guard, getting roots straight without burning scalp and ears is a delicate dance; and since the heat guard has gaping holes in it, the ears are still vulnerable even with it installed 3) Trying to determine which direction the barrel should be moving does slow down the process. Some reviewers have raved about how much time they are saving, and I don't find that to be the case in my first week of use. However, I can see it being faster once barrel direction is second nature.Overall, this is a GREAT product, and I am really happy that I bit the bullet and got it. Thanks to my InStyler Max I can't see ever going back to a flat iron! If you're on the fence, I encourage you to go for it.

I burned myself on the first try. USE THE HEAT GUARD.
I don't blame the product for the burn, though. That was my excitement over finally being able to use this productUnfortunately, it did not fulfill my hopes. While the product itself knows what it's doing I feel like it isn't as easy as the commercials said it would be.The InStyler comes with everything you'd need: InStyler, cooling mat, heat guard, combs, instructions, etc. It knew what problems customers would get into and it prepared very well. The practicality is where it depends on the customer, and this is where I feel the product fell flat for me.I have long, naturally curly Mexican hair that has only been straightened successfully once by a flat iron and someone's experienced hands. Since then I'd dreamed of being able to do that myself, and figured this product would show me the light. While it did 'soothe' my locks it didn't leave them silky, stylish or pretty - just a mess of raggy witch hair. I tried it multiple times and feared i'd burn my hair off even at the lowest setting. Straightening was a challenge in itself and I feel like it would be easier having someone do it for you, which defeated the purpose from the advertising infomercials. It was rather big and maybe that was the problem with me, as my hands are rather small and after doing three long strands my fingers did start to grow tired.Despite giving it many tries I failed what I wanted, and realized my hair looked better curled and uncombed than straightened with this thing. I usually only use my flat iron for my bangs, but at the price I paid for it there was no way I was going to keep this just for that. So, two days later my hopes were crushed and I was left with the task of going to UPS for a return as well as a nasty scab mark from the burn on my hairline my siblings keep taunting me will scar. It wasn't for me. Maybe I did it wrong? Probably. Just didn't work for me, so don't be surprised if it's not your thing. Fun to try, but I recommend having someone do it for you to see what can be done with it than trying to wing it yourself. I feel like if I'd had someone show me what could be done - if anything - with my hair I'd have been willing to keep going at it.If you're looking for that fast alternative you can get on the first try it might be better to stick to your regular straightener as I'm sure this thing takes a while to master for some people.

Fantastic for curly, wavy, thick long hair,
If you DON'T have t hick curly, wavy hair you can stop reading here, since the rest will not be relevant to you.I have thick, wavy, curly hair (almost down to my waist) and I was reluctant to buy such an expensive tool when I have a drawer full of tools that promised smooth silky hair and never delivered. For 30 years I blow dryed my hair and it took an hour and a half. Then I bought a very powerful hair dryer and it cut the time down to under an hour. Sometimes my hair looked great, sometimes it didn't. It was inconsistent and I did not know why. Since finding an hour to blow dry hair was a challenge, I ended up just letting my hair air dry and putting the curly, wavy, frizzy hair up in a bun. Recently I read many reviews of the InStyler online, and since I could find a number of reviews for my hair type, my vanity overcame the expense, and I ordered it.Now I use the InStyler, and the time is cut to under 30 minutes! But even more important, it works every time. I am SO sorry I waited so long to buy it. I have used it for about two months and have never burned myself (I bought the fancier model with the reverse direction, the burn guard, and the cover for the tip), I never tangled up my hair, and I also have never used the reverse direction option (I don't find it necessary.). People tell me my hair looks lovely and shiny. I am able to get a little curl on the end, but the rest of my hair is smooth and silky. The frizz is gone! This is a solid recommendation for anyone with curly, wavy, thick hair to run out and buy it immediately!

I love how this makes my hair look but I will ...
I love how this makes my hair look but I will say that this thing can be a little bit dangerous if you're not careful. My hair was caught in the turning mechanism twice. That's obviously more of a how I'm using it rather than the products fault, otherwise you'd just use a regular straightener. I think there's a lot more technique I need to learn to master the instyler and I think if you're not very good at doing your hair this will be tricky to get used to. There's a lot going on when it's spinning and the barrel gets very hot, but you will have better-looking hair than when you blow dry it on your own or straighten it since the bristles brush your hair as it straightens. You really can't get that done on a daily basis by yourself. I also think that the 2-way rotating mechanism is unnecessary, but it's nice to have I suppose. At first, I thought it was necessary but you kind of style your hair in the same direction all around unless you're afraid of the hot iron facing you then yes the 2-way rotating is useful. I also think that the pricing on this is a little much. This is more of a $50.00 product rather than 89.99. I got it on sale with 20% off and had I not heard of that deal I don't think I would have purchased this item. I say this because although it does its job well, I have a sneaky feeling that this thing doesn't last very long whereas the other hair tools I have right now have lasted me for years. I just don't see this lasting me for years, maybe at the most 5 years? I guess I'll find out then.
