Set in a futuristic Japan after the end of a brutal world war, science has advanced by leaps and bounds giving humanity the choice to prolong life and reduce suffering with the use of sophisticated cybernetics. With all of humanity linked into one system of minds and personalities known as ghosts, the biggest threat to civilization is the cyber terrorists capable of hijacking people s bodies and memories. When a ghost-infecting virus known as Fire-Starter begins spreading through the system resulting in the assassination of the Japanese Prime Minister, Major Motoko Kusanagi and her elite team of special operatives are called in to track down its source. As they delve deeper and deeper into their investigation, they uncover traces of government corruption and a shadowy broker that bears an all-too-familiar face. When your target can be anywhere and look like anyone, the only choice you have is to trust your ghost, and hope you aren t infected too.

Great
I call this movie the "thinking man's anime". I enjoy the entire franchise.

I'm a sucker for GitS so take this with a gain of salt.
Just to start off; this movie is a ending to the Alternative Architecture OVA / TV show which is a reboot of the other Ghost in the Shell (GitS) media. If you haven't see those first you probably won't get everything you could out of this. This is a deviation of the typical GitS movie where you get a standalone story that usually struggles with some aspect of humanity as it applies to robotics. Which is good I think because you can't really struggle with the same questions over an over again. As far as it goes this seems like more of a evolution of the Stand Alone Complex (SAC) story telling rather than being something that resembles the past movies. If you liked SAC you'll also like this as well. It's a little saddening that they seemingly rewrite history in some regards, It seems like they could've done a bit better job with coherency (as there wasn't that much to write around).

Great addition to Franchise.
I found this to be another great entry in the franchise and a top notch anime. Great story and superb animation make this an enjoyable film. I am a big fan of this series and have been following it from the beginning. I personally have never been disappointed. Every new addition just keeps me intrigued and always pleasantly surprised. This film brings back the crew and the Major in another cyber adventure. I love the fun and excitement all the way. This franchise is more complex than most anime out there but it is worth the extra attention. Those who like the old series may find fault but for me the film is a great add on.

Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie and New not particularly good review.
A few thoughts on this movie:I'm writing this assuming that you've already watched everything Ghost in the Shell. If you haven't, what are you doing with your life? I think it's time to reassess.I wish they'd said in the description that this movie isn't part of the original series, it follows the ARISE series. Now I'll have to go back and watch that so I can understand what all the changes were. While we're on the subject, can we please stop with these reimaginings of classic series? If you want to do something new you don't get there by taking a classic series and taking an eggbeater to it. If you have a good idea, people will like it and if you have a bad idea, associating it with something better won't save it, it just pisses people off. I don't care if the original author wrote it or not.Having watched this movie I have to say that it didn't stand out in any particular way but I have to admit I was spending a lot of time trying to figure out what was going on and why everyone looked and sounded different. This wasn't helped by the former lead English actress (or should I say actor?) being assigned to another character entirely. Our heroine (hero?) spends most of this movie in a suit of bright red motorcycle leathers. These are amazing in that they never make a single sound throughout the whole film despite the occasional acrobatics. Our leading lady from the original series never rode a motorcycle although I'm sure she knew how to.Our leading lady in the ARISE series would have gotten her ass kicked if she went against her counterpart in the original series. She doesn't seem to be as on top of things as her older counterpart. Maybe that's just age but... no it's not it's the writing. I really don't think this character could develop into the older character. Why would they reimagine the series with a worse lead, and in a counter espionage unit? The ARISE series does differentiate itself by losing the sexiness of everything that came before it. I'm not sure why this is but it is a noticeable difference in the series.I should also mention that this is the lamest movie title I've seen for anything anime.

Good viewing. Interesting and may have been responsible for spawning the whole animation explosion.
I enjoyed the entire series. Some are repackaged in separated episodes and full length movies. I made the error of purchasing the series but already got the movie version. Can be confusing to follow if you do not follow in sequence. Thus the movie is the better buy. I have not been able to be able to keep up with the offerings but I believe this is the last offering in this series. Please correct me if I am wrong. I would buy if this series picks up again.

Section 9 Assemble!
If your a Ghost in the Shell fan, this is a must. The new ARISE series was fantastic from both an artistic and story telling perspective. The movie takes place after the 4 mini-movie episodes (or 5, if you count the Pyro episode as well) and concludes the story began in Episode 1. This is a full length movie and has a mix of story and action, much like the series before it. ARISE was so good I only ask for more of it! Or at least more GITS. You can never have enough Motoko, Batou, and Section 9!

This is my favourite anime of all time. Drawn by true masterminds of biomechanical artistry.
Simply Amazing. The visual splendour that is Ghost In The Shell is an adventure that I have watched hundreds of times since the original. If you haven't seen the original its ok to start with this one because it will actually make the first movie make more sense(this is a prequel to the original). if you like it there is an entire episodic series as well making the ghost in the shell universe just massive with probably about 20 hours worth of animation.
