It’s a ribbon. It won’t stay on unless you glue it or use some type of adhesive or wrap it around and tie it.

Q: I want to use it for a border for a set of place mats I’m making, they would be machine washed once in while. Would this work?

They are made out of a kind of foam, so I don't think I would put them in a washing machine. Not even on delicate.
