Pharoah Vs. a God (Review #312)
This comic has a surprising amount of backstory, so I guess I'll get started. Back in I believe the 90's Marvel held a title wide initiative called the Acts of Vengeance. It saw the villains of the Marvel Universe switch up their usual opponents to see if this would finally ensure their revenge. I couldn't tell you what fans thought of it at the time but now some twenty-five years or so later Marvel has released a spiritual successor in the form of the Acts of Evil (2019) initiative, running through a number of annual issues this year. This time there doesn't seem to be a story connecting them all. This issue has Moon Knight going up against Kang the Conqueror, and it's written by Cullen Bunn. I'm usually a fan of his work and was even more excited to see what characters would be involved. At first you might find a pairing between the avatar of the Egyptian Moon God Khonshu and the time traveling monarch from the 30th century odd. Actually, Kang has a significant connection to ancient Egypt as very early in his personal timeline he went back to then and became a pharoah called Rama-Tut. The battle begins in the past as Kang battles to recover powerful artifacts stolen from his prior pharoah self. As the story progresses Bunn introduces a legacy of Moon Knights throughout broken history as the original tries to fix everything. Whether this will remain canon remains to be seen. The main characters are handled very well. Bunn doesn't really delve into Moon Knight's multiple personalities but that probably would have needlessly sidetracked the plot. The story touches on the heroes faith and religion in a very interesting way. The artists for the issue, Ibrahim Moustafa and Matt Horak, are people who's work I haven't seen before. They are incredibly good though and I hope they get more work at Marvel in the future. A very good comic, with interesting story.4/5
