They are nice receivers but I have encountered problems with the capacitors ...
I own 3 Yamaha receivers - 2 are considered high end. They are nice receivers but I have encountered problems with the capacitors failing on the two high end receivers. On the most expensive receiver my logic board also failed. I repaired one at an authorized retailer only to have the receiver go again outside of warranty. My HTR-5790 is one of the two nice receivers that failed. In the 5790 case, the well known problem of turning off after turning on is occurring. This is likely due to bad low-frequency rolloff capacitors in the amplifier feedback circuit. Here is the rub - I have to drive over 60 miles to the nearest authorized repair shop. Wait a month for the repair. And the warranty is ony 30 days. A real problem when the last repair did not last for more than 6 months. I give the unit 3 stars due to the fact that many modern Yamahas tend to fail after about 5 years. Google the problem "Yamaha receiver turns on then off"

You'll never want anything less than a Yamaha.
I've had mine for over a decade and listen to an extremely wide array of music and movies. I've been buying yamaha surround processors since they first started making them. I've never had one fail, and I have had them all to 11. I don't think I could ever buy another manufacturers product, due to their track record with me. I've even had this one on my boat in Salt water for over 7 years living on it. It still works and sounds like brand new. I'm now looking at the 11 channel systems and probably going to use this one in my master bedroom. It's like my dog, I'll never giver her up. Thank you Yamaha for putting out some great products and am looking forward to your 11 channel surround sound receivers. Oh one last thing, if you never heard yamaha speakers and are looking for great affordable speakers that last, and do way more than make noise, give them a try. I bet you'll buy one, I know I have, a few times.

Music Hall/Theater in your house!
I've owned many good stereo/sound systems over the years, but I have never heard anything like what the Yamaha HTR-5790 with YPAO produces(Yamaha's RX-V1400 is virtually identical). In a room (350 square feet) of decent speakers (Infinity Alpha speakers: seven speakers and a powered sub-woofer), good cables and interconnects, and Yamaha's Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer (YPAO) executed, the HTR surpasses anything I have ever listened to in home systems. CD Music and DVD movies/music are redefined in the most awesome way!!!! Take time and read the manual, then set it up! Good listening!

Great receiver
I've had this receiver for more than 15 years and it has performed beyond expectation. Great home theater receiver. Thought about upgrading but could not find anything comparable. Hope it lasts another 15 years.

Everything I expected and more
I bought this a little over a year ago, and have been very pleased with its performance. I wanted to start off right when updating my very antiquated Dolby box receiver and go to DTS-ES and 5.1 EX with THX certification. When shopping around, I quickly narrowed my choice to those receivers offering component up-conversion. (Although now, 2 component inputs is not enough, but newer Yamaha models support 3 and full HDMI- up-conversion). After further research it became quite clear that this receiver is very versatile and has the ability to assign I/O match-ups... ensuring that it should exceeded almost everyone's needs. The footprint of it's connections is very versatile but also makes hooking many devices up a tedious procedure. One of the final things I noticed that solidified this as my choice to go with was an observation I made. If you go to almost any Best Buy store and visit their Home Theater demonstration section, you'll notice something... Almost all of their setups are being run off a Yamaha head unit. Most are the Professional model line, but other research I found stated that the guts of their pro and standard line are nearly identical. If they are reliable enough for Best Buy to use and have abused in their showrooms day in and day out, then that should speak volumes over the competitor receivers. All in all I've been very pleased... If you get this receiver or one of the newer models, do take the time to read the manual once or twice through. It will shed light on many of the powerful features available and make installation all the easier.Cheers

Correct Specifications
Checking the Yamaha web pages for the HTR-5790 140 Watts per channel and 110 watts per channel are both correct measured at 1kHz@8Ohms and 20Hz-20kHz@8Ohms respectivly. According to Yamaha 0.04% total harmonic distortion @8Ohms is correct. With the number of features on this receiver it is entirely conceiveable that either or both of the parties mentioned made an omission or a mistake. It is doubtful either reputable business would deliberately misstate features or misrepresent a model identifier. Accusations should not be made unless they are specific and appropriately researched.

Awesome A/V receiver
This is the second Yamaha reciever that I have owned. I replaced my other one since it was bought right before dolby digital became available. The Yamaha HTR 5790 is incredible in every respect. The surround effects that are put out with the 7 speakers plus the powered subwoofer that I have connected to it are fantastic. I have it in a 18'x18' room with small speakers but it fills the room as though it were in a theatre. I was hesitant on replacing my other RXV870 model thinking that there may not be a noticable sound difference but I am glad I did. In addition to the audio output being awesome, the receiver not only up-converts s-video signal to component video signal, to my surprise it up-converts RCA input to component video input. I was not as concerned about power ratings as a couple of the other reviews but I can say I cannot handle more than 50% of its power (volume set at 0 dbs) when my satellite receiver is being operated.
