Still a great cookbook after all these years!
This is a very good cookbook, especially for a beginner. I have the 1980 version, bought this new version for my daughter. I am disappointed by two changes. First, the book is very heavy and bulky. Second, my version has a large section in the front with a photo of EVERY finished dish and the recipe page number, the new version has a small percentage of dish photos scattered throughout the book. In spite of these changes, I still like this cookbook very much. My daughter and I looked through the whole book and I love the new recipes that have been added, as well as the updates to some of the older recipes. One of the best parts is the Useful Information sections, including measurement conversions, food storage guides, equipment definitions, cooking term glossary, cuts of meats and special meal planning guides. Still a great cookbook after all these years. Thanks for the update!

In my opinion the index has issues
I will start out saying that Cooks Illustrated cookbooks are my go to book for 95 percent of my cooking and baking. For years I have used the Good housekeeping Illustrated cookbook when I wanted a quick easy recipe. Years ago my puppy chewed the binding and I was going to replace it with the same after all these years. Instead I saw this book. I opened the book and was curious to see the version of basic meatloaf. Hmm. No meatloaf reference in index. Surprised that basic cookboo does not have a meatloaf recipe. Nothing under beef. Nothing under ground beef. Next day I thumb through and wow a meatloaf recipe. Indexed as Cajun meatloaf and Susan's meatloaf. If you don't look up Susan or Cajun out of luck. Today I decide I want a basic muffin recipe. Hmm. I look up muffins. See quick breads. Look up quick breads and nothing for muffins. Oh there it is. Under B for Basic muffins. Everything seems to be a hunt.

Good range of recipes, but REALLY heavy book
Hard to handle, doesn't even fit well in cookbook holder- you may want to consider online version because otherwise very useful

Great Basic Cookbook Kept Current with the Times
Bought this for my daughter as a Christmas gift. It was the first cookbook my mother got, the first I got and the first for my daughter--all from our mothers. This is a great basic cookbook and my daughter was thrilled to see it has some more exotic recipes in it than mine has. Nice that GH has kept pace with the changing times. The book jacket had a slight tear in it upon arrival but I didin't take off a star for this. My mother's 1950 copy is still in use, although held together with a rubber band, and so is my 1973 version. The book jacket will likely be long gone before the book stops being useful.

Content-wise, it's a home run!
I bought this as a gift for a friend who wanted a cookbook, she wants to be a good cook. She loves it, she calls it her encyclopedia! I have the 1986 edition, which is a staple in my library. This book proudly states, on the back cover, that it was printed in China. Cover and binding are a bit cheap. Publisher needs to remedy that. Given the cover price, we shouldn't have to worry that it won't last a few generations, like it's predecessors. My 1986 edition is still sound, and has stood the test of time. I fear that this new edition may not hold up like that.Let me be clear, the content is a home run, and definitely a gift for anyone who wants to learn to cook.

I was hoping for a US version of my UK ...
I was hoping for a US version of my UK GH cookbook, which was my bible when I lived in the UK. It doesn't seem to have staple, basic, traditional meals, or maybe not the ones that are staples in 2017. Hey ho

Old Favorites - New Ideas
The Good Housekeeping Cookbook has been a mainstay in my cookbook library forever. As the years went by, I replaced the earlier editions with updates. However, I must say that this 125th anniversary edition is the best yet. Interesting and informative, it contains a great many new and classic recipes and nice color photos as well. I use it for reference and as a source of ideas.

Another for the Cookery Library
This is a must have for my Library of Good cookbooks. An informative read. Shame that more and more I am buying American rather than British, possibly due to not filling the coffers of all the "Celeb Chefs etc" with there pultry rendtions of a good book.

The Good Housekeeping Cookbook
I have always liked Good Housekeeping Cookbooks. I have many Good Housekeeping cookbooks and this one is very good with information on many recipes. I just recently made their recipe "Chocolate Wows" and they are the cookie to eat for those who enjoy chocolate and these cookies do have the chocolate. There are many more recipes I will be trying and am sure I will enjoy them just as much as the cookies.Thelma.
