Its good at distilling water
Good Water Distiller. I have been using it for almost 2 months now. The distiller is easy to setup and to clean; I typically use 1 cup of Distilled vinegar to clean the boiler chamber out after a couple weeks. The easiest way to do this is to add 1 cup of Vinegar and the fill the chamber up to the max line with hot water. Then place it on the distiller and let it boil for 10 minutes and then turn the distiller off and let it stand for an additional 30 minutes. This makes it very easy to remove the scaling from the bottom and sides of the container without the need to scrub vigorously. Water-Wise does sell a chemical to do this, but I find that its rather expensive and Vinegar is cheaper, readily available and not harmful or toxic. The fan on this unit makes an audible sound, that is loud enough to be heard even with background noise so placing it in an area in your home where you won't be spending the majority of time may be best. I chose to place it downstairs where I usually don't spend much time, so when its running I cannot hear the fan while working, watching a movie or reading a book. This unit is mostly plastic. The catch container or Carafe is all plastic. The boiling chamber and coil are Stainless steel, but the boiling chamber is encased in plastic as well. My only gripe with this unit is that there is a small half glass/half plastic flange on the cover of the boiler chamber. I would have preferred that this was all Glass or stainless steel and not the cheap plastic that its made from that will most likely wear out after a year of use. Be careful when cleaning the cover as well, if you are too rough with the flange you could easily damage it. For reference I typically boil 2-3 gallons of water a day, which is half of the maximum amount this unit can do. For the price (399.99) I hope it lasts a few years.Overall I give the unit 4 out of 5 stars. I will do a follow up after I have owned it longer. Cheers

DOA
My Dad and my Uncle have the Waterwise 9000. They have had minor expected problems and they do really like the 9000. I decided to get one also as I am a big fan of distilled water. I choose the 8800 as I did not like the small mouth of the collection jar in the 9000.I received the unit and followed the instruction to clean and fill it. I did not spill any water or overfill it.All looked good to go for the first cycle (cleaning). I then plugged it in and set the clock. Everything looked good so I pressed the start button. At this point the fan came on, the unit clicked and the clock stopped displaying half of it's segments. I watched it for a moment or two and decided to unplug and check the unit. After a visual checkout I plugged it back in. It is dead. Nothing showed on the display and it did not make any sounds. Pushing the buttons did not work.I tried different power outlets and I tried the a toaster and a microwave in these outlet. The toaster and microwave worked, the 8800 did not.I am returning it as DOA. Amazon as always accepted the return without question.I really wanted a distiller today. Now I don't know if I should try to order this one again or a different one.The Waterwise Company was great on the phone and were helpful. They have stood behind it's products for my Dad and Uncle. Let's hope I was just unlucky and received one of the few defective units. Thanks for reading this long note. I really wanted it to work!

Great alternative for purifying water that you already paid for.
I love this machine. I originally fond one for just $25 ina thrift store, but it was lost in a move, so I bought another. Sadly, the shipper of this product was not quite thoughtful in regards to the shipping and it was a little damaged, but it was mostly cosmetic. I use this to pretty much make purified water for tea, coffee, and for use in water features. It can process 1 gallon of water in about 4 hours if kept clean. The drawback to the process is that the machine generates quite a bit of heat, the output measured at 110F. Now if it's a cold winter's day, this can be a benefit because you're using electricity to purify water AND make heat, but in the summer, it's a bit nasty. If you can put it outside to process you shoudl be fine, or if you have a very well cooled home, it shouldn't be too much of a problem either. Now the device does require a filter because purified water is actually acidic. But if you can't or won;t get filters made for it, you can make them fairly easily with some activated carbon that you can get in pet stores for aquariums, and some cheesecloth. Depending on the amount of use, a filter can last for a month to a season or longer.Clean the kettle periodically by either running vinegar water though it (remove the filter on the collection pitcher) or water that has powdered citric acid dissolved in it. This will eliminate scale and crust and still allow for potable water (thought you may want to run a cycle after to flush the system of any traces). The pitcher should be washed with some warm water and very MILD detergent.

Four Stars
Good machine, though high priced. Works perfectly for a small family and looks good sitting on the kitchen counter.
