Great gift
A Christmas gift for my husband who grew up in the 40/50's. He loves reading about the artists who did comics and drawings. This is a great gift for anyone who is a reader of the history of people who made the comics in news papers and other menus.

A look at two classics: Mort Walker and Beetle Bailey
Mort Walker created a classic military cartoon from what used to be a college strip... not surprisingly, as that is how a lot of military CAREERS got started! This book of photos, artwork and cartoons illustrates not just the development of Beetle Bailey but also Hi and Lois and other strips Walker was part of. Mort Walker's friends and family also feature heavily in this book. This is a fun read for anyone interested in Beetle Bailey or even cartooning in general.

Better than expected
This is a great, attractively composed book with plenty of enjoyable artwork and interesting anecdotes by the talented Mort Walker. I especially enjoyed the special section on "navel excision" (ha!) and every single sketch of the incomparable Miss Buxley.

Excellent and Authentic
This is exactly what it sounds like: A famous cartoonist's scrapbook. Mort Walker is most famous for his contribution to pop-culture and the funnies pages because of his smash hit comics Beetle Bailey and Hi and Lois. Additionally, he has created and produced ten globally syndicated comic strips, founded the International Museum of Cartoon Art, served in World War 2, holds a few patents, earned several degrees, and contributes through volunteer work to a number of charitable organizations. These are only a few of the highlights!Instead of a traditional auto-bigraphy Mort Assembled his essays, personal pictures, sketches, comics, and other anecdotes from his life into a book. It is in chronological order and the pages are full of laughs, never before seen drawings, and heart-warming stories. Growing up during the depression on the great-plains Mort was determined to become successful specifically through the medium of cartooning. He sold his first cartoons while still in elementary school and continues to draw his comic strips today. He is a dynamic artist and several paintings and other projects are featured in the book. Mort is much more than a cartoonist. He is an inventor, story-teller, athlete, artist, father, veteran, philanthropist, and more. This is a fun read for anyone interested in Americana. From serious comic artists to casual fans, this is sure to please. I have seen a signed and limited leather-bound version of this for sale and plan on buying that if I see it.

That man led a...charmed life.
Mort Walker could've BROKEN record as the world's youngest cartoonist ever to make professional debut at age 11! But don't forget that he was a whiz at architecture, a busy high schooler who did EVERYTHING from editor to cheerleader, a war hero holding prisoners in Italy, and a legendary father who raised several talented cartoonists to boot! Not to mention the fact he once did SEVERAL comic strips at once and that he also aged beautifully into a white-haired saint. How can the rest of us ever measure up to this man, who could be easily the world's MOST FAMOUS cartoonist ever! This is truly a rich book packed with Mort Walker's personal (but amusing) autobiography, old cartoons, rare illustrations (there's even a spread of a NAKED Miss Buxley!), and oodles of photos featuring himself and his ever-growing clan. There are also some fun trivial facts about the eyeless Beetle Bailey, who was once a college student and now serving forever as an Army private, which we all come to know and love. We are also treated to the historical evolution of Mort Walker's famous comic strip as well as his partnership with the late Dik Browne, who created "Hagar The Horrible" and "Hi and Lois". You'll truly love the nostalgic trip through those timeless cartoons that Mort Walker and Dik Browne produced as well as their funny memoirs together, too.Once again, I say Mort Walker himself must've been hand-picked by God!

A treasure Biography with humor thrown in
I love comics. So there was no doubt in my mind that I wouldn't enjoy this book. But the sheer amount of information and humor Mort Walker puts into this book set me aback. Mort Walker himself is so intertwined with famous cartoonists it's no wonder he writes such an excellent strip. This book is a must read if you are even remotely interested in comics or humor. That's why I rated it 5 out of 5 stars, and give it a hearty thumbs up and my hopes and good wishes for the cartoonist.
