10th Century Muslim Surgeon
This is very concise and brief book of 100 pages about the famous 10th century Physician and Surgeon Abu Al-Quasim Al- Zahrawi also known as Albucasis. The book seems to be targeted towards young students and those needing a quick introduction to the world of Muslim Science and thought of this time period. The book takes the reader through the origin of Islam and its history till the 10th century. The establishment of the Caliphate in Al-Anduras (Spain) and the various Muslim Philosophers and thought leaders it created (such as Rhazes, Avicenna and Averroes), is covered well. The development of ancient medicine and the splendid work done by Arab and Muslim scholars in translating and building up on work of the Greek scholars like Plato, Aristotle, Hippocrates and Galen is explained well. (While the rest of Europe was languishing in the Dark Ages)However Albucasis and his famous work 'Al Tasrif' is covered only very briefly in a few pages in the last quarter of the book. In spite of that, Albucasis achievements such as inventing over 200 surgical instruments, and his contributions in Obsterics, Orthopedics, Dentistry, Surgery and other areas is simply amazing. The book is useful for an introduction and would serve the purpose of invoking the curiosity of the reader for further study.
