Great resource
This huge tome has a bit of everything related to mechanical music. It has a history of each manufacturer, a list of the products they produced, and lots of photos and reproductions of old ads, factory photos, manuals etc. It's fun to browse, but not very conducive to 'cover-to-cover' reading. It's a bit of an eclectic magpie's nest of information that the author has tried to curry into a cohesive, informative whole with mixed success.I would have given the book a lower rating, except for one thing. The author has done a fantastic job of documenting and mapping the paper or cardboard rolls for each instrument to the actual scale and instruments being played. For anyone trying to restore an old machine, or adapt one sort of instrument to play music composed for another, this is a priceless treasure. To the best of my knowledge, much of this information is not available anywhere else, and it would be incredibly time-consuming to reproduce. This is an enjoyable book that ALSO happens to contain rare and vital information, for which it merits a full five stars.
