Good, fast and silent, but not the cheapest. Drive reports serial number that is incompatible with the manufacture's web site.
The NAS ready 3TB HGST Deskstar is a fast and silent 7200 RPM 3.5" Hard Drive. Being a "NAS Ready" drive, you get better MTBF and a better warranty (3 years). Recently, a study was published on hard drive brand reliability and HGST had the best scores. I hope this drive meets my expectations, and so far everything has been good. Some information of interest:- The drive supports TLER which is useful for NAS setups. Note that if you use your drive in a Linux md RAID (soft RAID), TLER shouldn't make much of a difference, as the Linux raid setup won't kick a drive out of the array for timeouts (theoretically it will, after a very very long timeout and multiple resets, but I haven't tested it.)- The drive is fast, clocking 148MB/s on hdparm -t. I know hdparm is not a good speed test, but posting the long and cryptic results of bonnie++ here would surely annoy people. The performance seems equal to other 7200 RPM drives I have around. I didn't notice any of the noise problems reported by other reviewers.- The drive has a total of 5,860,533,168 512-byte physical sectors, but as most current drives, it requires partitions aligned at 4k sector boundaries (not doing so when you partition will make things incredibly slow when writing data.) The total number of sectors is useful for those with RAID arrays (as a rule, you can add this drive to your array if it has more sectors than your current drives, not otherwise.)- Since this is a 3TB drive, it requires a GPT partition table to be able to create partitions with more than 2TB or starting higher than the 2TB point in the disk. It is still possible to create two 2TB partitions on a non-GPT partition sector (as long as the first ends slightly below the 2TB mark.)- An interesting note about warranty and serial numbers: I checked the HGST website for the drive's warranty and it said my serial number was invalid. After some research (and brute force testing), I discovered that the serial number reported by smartctl/hdparm (on Linux) and possibly many other utilities that read the serial number directly from the drive has a "prefix" that is not recognized by the HGST web site. In my case, I had the remove the first six characters of the reported serial number to make it work.

Great...but not silent.
I bought 4x3TB drives for my RAID enclosure. They will be running in RAID 10 and will be used in a media/file server for my home network. I ran 3 runs to certify each of drive (took about 30 hours to complete) and none of the drives encountered any errors. My only complaint is these run a little louder than I thought and can easily be heard from about 10-15 feet away from the enclosure. I was under the impression that these would be much quieter. I have all 4 of the Hitachi drives inside an OWC ThunderBay 4 Enclosure and have replaced the stock fan with a Noctua fan. The enclosure is attached via Thunderbolt to a 2012 Mac Mini with i7 2.3ghz CPU and 16GB 1600Mhz Corsair Vengeance Memory. While I am really picky about noise, I will not dock a star since I bought these drives for reliability.I found these drives from reliability tests run by a reputable cloud storage company. Hitachi was way more reliable than any other company out there. I have no doubt that these drives will be reliable and last me for a long time! I do, however, wish the warranty was longer than 3 years...would like to see a 5 year warranty at a minimum, but oh well. These seem to run cool so far.SPEED TEST: I used Black Magic Speed Test (Ran on OS X Yosemite with 5GB Test File)1 Drive:Read Speed: 156 MB/sWrite Speed: 155 MB/s4 Drives in RAID 10:Read Speed: 305 MB/sWrite Speed: 301 MB/s4 Drives in RAID 0 (just for fun)Read Speed: 608 MB/sWrite Speed: 603 MB/sIf you are looking for a fast, reliable hard drive to run in a 24/7 NAS/RAID environment, look no further...this is the drive for you. If you require a quiet drive (i.e. audio recording environment) then I would try to find a quieter NAS drive.

Nice Performers, Reliable, but LOUD....
I bought these drives (two) based on this company's reputation and the Backblaze reliability stats. The 3 TB version in particular is a good value. Have to say that so far, they are performing in my WD EX2 Ultra enclosure in a RAID1 setup without issue.Only two issues - these drives are NOISY - kind of reminiscent of the "Seagate in my early 90's Packard Bell" noisy (head clicking noise). Much louder than any Seagate or WD drive I currently have. To be fair, I kind of like the reassuring click (it's in the other room where my NAS enclosure is), as long as I am not around it too much. Might be bothersome if your computer in the same room where you'll use this drive. I could even hear it in the garage below the bedroom where my NAS enclosure sits, with the vibrations transmitted through the floor. Also, these run pretty hot - regularly in the low 50's C under load based on my WD My Cloud software - my WD Reds and Seagate Ironwolfs in my two QNAPs are significantly cooler, like 6 - 10 C cooler. Not sure if that is an enclosure issue or a drive issue, but suspect possibly both.I still feel a lot of confidence in these, and would rate them 4.5 stars, so will round up to a "5" star rating.

HGST is better than WD and Seagate
HGST Deskstar NAS 3.5-Inch 3TB 7200RPM SATA III 64MB Cache Internal Hard Drive Kit (0S03660) According to S.M.A.R.T monitoring data, the value of C1(load/unload of hard disk heads) will not increase when the drive is idle, so HGST is better than WD and Seagate. The oldest HGST drive in my computer had already worked for over 8,400 hours (02-Jan-2017)without any errors. No issues.
Reliable, fast, and compatible. A boring product (which is good for a hard drive). This is my second one from HGST, the other doing duty as a backup drive in a different machine.

Way better than Seagate
Way better than Seagate, somewhat better than WD. realizing most come from the same factory, HGST still run quiet and are well built.
