Nuforce AIR-DAC-UWIRELESS Wireless Audio DAC System with Receiver and Transmitter (Black)

The air dac combines two basic functions: streaming and digital-to-audio conversion. I was disappointed with both. The setup was easy and worked right away. I liked the idea that it creates its own network instead of burdening my existing wireless. But the streaming is imperfect and dependent on how busy the computer is. The result is it stutters. I also hear some crackles and pops along with a bit of background hiss. I was also disappointed with the digital to audio conversion, which is not as good as the DAC built into my Denon receiver. I was able to compare the Nuforce Air Dac analog output side by side with an Apple TV (which sends an unconverted digital signal to the receiver for it to convert). The Apple+Denon combination was better than the Nuforce Air Dac, which sounds a bit bright and electronic -- a harsher sound.

I only gave this product 4-stars due to the fact that the first USB transmitter (uTX) that was included with my kit was defective. Plugged in to my Win7 x64 PC and nothing happened (device not recognized). On the plus side, NuForce did agree to cross-ship a replacement and sent a prepaid mailing label to return the defective one. However, I was excited to use the product and the delay (9 days total after going back and forth with Customer Service and shipping time) was disappointing.The replacement worked right away. I have not noticed the problems that the previous reviewer noted (pops, intermittent drops, etc.). My setup has so far worked flawlessly. Very quiet with no drops. My workstation is a quad-core CPU with 12 GB RAM. I have surfed the web concurrently while streaming music and noticed no drops. As for sound-quality, I do notice that my WMAs (ripped at 256kbps) don't sound as open as the CDs (ADCOM amp/pre-amp, Cal Audio Labs Icon MK-2 CD, Golden Ear Triton Two speakers), but since it isn't a lossless rip, that probably explains the difference (was fine for my computer speakers). I will need to re-rip my collection to lossless now that I can stream to my higher quality home stereo.Although I only have been listening for 2 days, at this point I am very satisfied with my purchase. Would have awarded 5-stars if everything had worked immediately out of the box. Based on my experience with this product so far, I will be buying the iPod/iPad transmitter as well so that I can stream from my iPad as well.Update: Noticed that I do get heavy static when I start a VMware Workstation virtual machine. Even though the VM is connected to my internal soundcard Speakers (not to the AirDAC/uTX), once the VM is running, 90% of the sound coming from the speakers is static, with 10% coming from the Host PC connected to the uTX. Haven't been able to resolve this yet. The only solution once this happens is to shutdown the VM, then reboot the host. Stopping the VM without a reboot doesn't resolve the issue.

Pros: Nice sound, easy installation with no set-up issues, small packageCons: Loses signal frequently (plays static), some construction issuesI received my system this evening and was initially impressed - the unit is small and was well packaged. I have been looking for a way to play music from my PC and other devices through my home stereo and thought that this was the ticket. Although this device has some nice attributes, it drops the playing signal frequently (about every 4th song) leaving static playing over the stereo. (Volume was 100% from the PC as directed in the manual, not greater than 25 feet away from the receiver.)After removing the unit from the box, I started to remove the protective film covering the top of the receiver, but the top cover came off exposing the electronics and ejecting the light guide. It was simple enough to replace after I found the part, but this shouldn't happen.Installation was easy. The USB transmitter was quickly recognized and there were no issues playing music through my PC. I found the sound quality to be very nice (it really does sound nice when it is playing) and to be fair, I want to give it a good try over the next few days before returning it. Hopefully I can amend this review for the better, but so far, it is not usuable without a more reliable signal.

I read lots of reviews and most of them were very good so I thought I'd give it a try.This thing surpassed all my expectations, if I hadn't heard this with my own ears I would never have believed you could transmit music and have it sound so damned good.I use it across my sitting room approximately 30 feet and there is absolutely no distortion or dropping out whatsoever it sounds just like the RCA connection if not better.Very nicely packaged, very light receiver but feels solid enough and once it's set up you need not touch it anyway, the transmitter sticks out of the laptop a bit but it's no problem and for this quality of music without the hassle of trailing cables I'd put up with a transmitter twice the size.This is just a fantastic piece of kit, if you want to play music from your hard drive I cannot think of a better way to do it...buy one!!

Mise à jour 1 an après : malgré un usage délicat, le "dongle" (partie USB) se démantèle seul : la carcasse de plastique se déchausse et laisse apparaître les circuits intégrés. Soudain l'objet n'est plus reconnu par le récepteur. Il n'émet sans doute plus rien. Juste quand la garantie annoncée expire (1 an).Le 1er lot que j'avais reçu il y a un an était défectueux, Amazon avait été impeccable et avait expédié un autre. Mais là, la garantie est expirée donc j'ai juste un morceau d'électronique bon pour la poubelle.Mon commentaire le 17 février 2013 :Je me félicite d'avoir opté pour cet objet après avoir failli céder aux sirènes du haut de gamme, très cher pour une différence sans doute pas justifiée pour mes oreilles : attention je ne suis pas audiophile! (ce produit est critiqué par les sites audiophiles ).Mais je suis sensible à un son clair et dynamique et j'aime les basses bien définies (dans des fréquence assez basses pour que ça ne fasse pas effet "bass boost" boueux), les aigues qui ne chouintent pas, et de ce point de vue, j'estime ne pas avoir à faire de compromis avec de DAC. Ce petit boîtier fait parfaitement le travail, mieux que son concurrent à la pomme (qui coûte 1/2 prix de celui-ci il est vrai). Pas de fils, de trous dans les murs et de goulottes, et un petit DAC qui est censé sortir un son meilleur que celui de la carte son de base de mes ordis.Et même s'il faut sortir les 200 balles, en fait dans le paysage des DAC c'est bon marché.Les moins :Quelques coupures parfois, mais trop rares pour que ça me gâche le plaisir. Par contre, à cause de cela, je n'en ferais pas un usage professionnel si je veux un flux garanti 100% sans interruption.Et puis ça reste des ondes (c'est en même temps la valeur ajoutée et le défaut), à des fréquences dont on n'a pas encore prouvé l'innocuité. Si on est électrosensible mieux vaut choisir un vendeur qui accepte les retours sans faire d'histoire au cas où on ne supporte pas les fréquences utilisées.

Matériel reçu dans un emballage de qualité (permettant un transport en toute sérénité) . Mon achat étant récent, la qualité sonore est correcte de prime abord, car n' ayant pas encore essayé ce matériel sur "tout" les genres musicaux ; Mon avis ne sera pas objectif pour l' instant ...- La détection du dongle sous XP-SP3 est native, sous un "vrai" linux Debian, ubuntu, etc ... Aucun problème de détection non plus !!! - Petit bémol pour android qui ne possède pas d' applications "standard" permettant de gérer le dongle USB nativement alors qu' il est détecté au boot et reconnu par android ! Un comble. ( tests à poursuivre )Pour conclure, cet achat était tout indiqué pour mon utilisation domestique : bibliothèque musicale dans une pièce (PC) et lieu d' écoute dans une autre (Système HI-FI) .

Les plus:-Qualité de son excellente, testé sur du matériel de qualité, impossible de faire la différence par rapport à un câble, bien que l'on ait l'impression que les basses sont boostées, mais c'est vraiment du domaine de l'impression, mystère!- Complètement plug and play, la clé est directement reconnue comme un nouvel haut parleur qu'il suffit de déclarer par défaut, et par la suite le fait de brancher ou débrancher la clé fait basculer le son du pc à la chaine, on ne peut pas faire plus simple d'utilisation.- Aucune coupure du son et latence surement très faible car on ne ressent aucune gêne en regardant un film.- Design à mon goût.- Très belle boite, recouverte de tissus noir, sans logo, ma copine me l'a piquée!- Clé discrète même si je l'aurais souhaitée plus petite, mais sur le marché y'a pas mieux.- Testé à 10 mètres à travers deux cloisons de briques sans problèmes.Les moins:- Le plastique qui protège le dessus du boitier laisse des traces de colle.- Quand on enlève ce même plastique le couvercle se déboite, ça permet d'admirer l'intérieur.- Le connecteur d'alimentation sur le boitier n'est pas assez solide, je vais le consolider à l'araldite.Conclusion:Surement ce qui se fait de mieux pour la fonction, mais pour le prix, la fabrication médiocre est inadmissible, on paye la technologie et le manque de concurrence mais l'image de Nuforce en prends un coup.Je suis quand même satisfait de mon achat.a noter que tous les réglages son de Windows genre équaliseur sont désactivés, le son est pris directement à la source sans modification, cela présente des avantages et des inconvénients.avantage: aucun risque de conserver un réglage pour les haut parleurs du pc que l'on aurait oublié (j'utilise un pc portable avec une correction THX trustudio).inconvénient: on pourrait avoir envie de se servir de ces réglages, et bien non.

I don't usually review products but this one works like a charm, does exactly what I wanted it to do and provides excellent sound quality. Now, so long as it is durable it's perfect. I wanted something that would wirelessly stream PC sound to my amp/receiver in another location of the house. Very easy to set up, takes up very little space and actually connects to my old amp/receiver because it uses RCA leads.
