1-star or 5-star I wasn't sure. Exaco vs. Oxo bins. Which one?
Initial reaction. 1-star. Cheap plastic rubbish, and I'm thinking boy am I glad I already own 3 of those great OXO compost bins. I check the price I paid on Amazon. Okay. It wasn't expensive, I'm a little less annoyed, I'll give it a go. And the wife says it looks nicer on the counter top than the OXO bins, plus 1 of these is equivalent to 3 of the OXO bins in terms of capacity. I guess the OXO is about 3/4 gallon. We used a plastic store bag as a liner. 1-week later....I am sold. Absolutely no smell whatsoever. We empty it much less often than the smaller OXO bins. It's the perfect size for the counter top. The carbon filter really works. Zero odor. I was concerned about the non-removable lid, which might complicate cleaning, so instead of throwing veggies directly into the bin, we use a liner. Open the lid, tie the bag, take it out to the compost heap (discard the plastic bag!). Job done, and the bin is still perfectly clean.Really glad I didn't return it. The OXO bins are now in storage. They were great, and easy to clean, but ironically they needed cleaning much more often because you're not using a liner. And they had to be emptied daily because of the smell.

Everything it was supposed to be...
This bucket is excellent, and does exactly what it should. It is small enough to store easily in the kitchen, but big enough to hold scraps for a few days. Obviously if you have a bigger family it will fill up faster, but for a family of 2-3 you should only have to empty it bi-weekly. The lid seals well and the filter works to keep smells out. It also has notches on the back so if you wanted to hang it on the back of a door or on the wall you could rig it up to do so, which I liked. We use compostable bags to line it for the food, which work well, but if you don't it is easy enough to clean out. Since we have a worm bin, we like to have the food sit for a few days before putting it in so that the decomposition process has started and the worms can feed more quickly, this does the job perfectly!I saw a few of the reviews where people were complaining about fruit flies getting into the bin, these people are obviously confused. Fruit flies don't get into your bin, they come from your fruit (*fruit* flies). If you wash your fruit well, this will not be a problem. I've never had an issue with these in this bucket, or my worm bin. Excellent little bin to do the job right!

Great bin, fits perfectly underneath the sink.
I've only been actively using this for about a week. So far, everything is going well. The bin is made of relatively thin plastic, but the lid has a decent amount of flex to it and shouldn't crack unless you're being rough with it. Not to say you have to baby it, I certainly don't and haven't noticed any ill effects (it has only been a week though). The filter seems to keep the stink at bay. I notice that after the second day, It'll smell terribly when I open the lid. But not before. Yay!This bin fits perfectly underneath the sink.I would recommend using 3 gallon compostable bags and a large rubber band to hold it in place around the top. The rubber band is not necessary, however does a good job keeping the bag up when loading. The product lost a star because the plastic could be a bit more heavy duty, and perhaps a rubber seal would be a nice addition. For the price, this item is exactly what I need.

Nice size and will last many years.
This kitchen composter is one of the best things I have bought. I love that there no no longer have a bowl of scraps on the counter. I have been using it for 3 years without any issues. I think part of the reason it has lasted is because it is made of plastic that is not rigid. The pail will actually flex a little rather than cracking if there is any pressure applied. I personally like to keep it on the floor and it has been kicked many times and never been damaged. The capacity is good and takes several days to fill. It has been very durable. Since it is on the floor it does get the occasional kick but has never cracked. You can use it as is or get bags for it. I use bags as it makes it easier to take out and easier to clean the composter. It can even be run through the dishwasher. The lid locks tightly in place and with the charcol filter we have never gotten any odor escaping the pail. If you are looking for a kitchen composter that will last you found it.

Composting problems solved!
I LOVE this bin! I have a large compost bin behind my garage, but who wants to trek to the back of their yard in the dark at night in the freezing cold every time they peel a piece of fruit? I used to keep compostable materials in a container on my countertop and bring them out back once a day -- but even after half a day it would seem that they would start to a) smell and b) get moldy. Based on reviews, I decided to give this thing a try. It does everything I thought it would and more. It fits perfectly under my sink, and still manages to hold a ton of stuff. I have actually been loading the bin up for over a week at a time before I bring it out to the big composter (and I have a lot of compost material because I'm vegan)....and it still doesn't smell at all, thanks to the filters that go in the top. Somehow, nothing - not even the stuff at the bottom of the container - grows mold (I have been using the compostable bags that fit in here...maybe that is why). Can't say enough good things about this bin - especially for the price! Give it a try! It does exactly what it is supposed to do - which is more than I can say for a lot of things. Love that I am helping the environment and also saving money by making my own compost for my garden.

Keeps smells down, but not fruit flies...
I needed a good bin to collect scraps for the compost pile in. We were just using a small trash can before, so I thought this would be nice since it had a lid and handle. It’s pretty much a plastic bin with a lid. I’m not sure if the filter does anything (we dump the bin frequently and don’t compost meat or dairy) But it DOES NOT keep fruit flies out, it actually does the opposite and gives them a dark home to live and breed in. The lid doesn’t have a seal or anything on it, so the flies can easily crawl in and eat and breed as much as they want. I appreciate the fact that it has a handle and lid, and wouldn’t be bad for keeping in a garage, but we won’t be keeping it in the kitchen any longer. We’re keeping it, but it’s definitely not worth the price.

Loved this item!
I read the reviews on this and decided to order it, partly because it is a recommended item from Cooks Illustrated and I have been happy with everything I have purchased that has been on their list. I was concerned with both odour and fruit flies, because with just two of us, it is sometimes inconvenient to go out to the composter. Works as stated. Good size. Big enough to hold a good amount, small enough to fit under the sink. Best part? No odour OR fruit flies!

Fits costco compost bags perfectly
I had a OXO countertop compost bin but I had to empty it daily at least and I felt bad that only about half the bag was being used. This is my solution. Im so happy with this bin, love the cute design on top, love the filter and lid and love how I can fill my bag all the way up and feel less wasteful that way. Thanks to the reviewer that mentioned the little clips to hold the bag in place! It works perfectly!

Pretty happy
This arrived with one of the hinges broken, but we couldn't be bothered going through the return process, so we slapped some duct tape on it and started using it. So far, so good. It's been filled several times now, including with rotting vegetables from the forgotten about corner of our fridge, and we've never noticed an odour. It's a good size for us - two adults and two small children who eat all meals at home and consume plenty of vegetables, and we fill it in about a week. Besides the hinge, which probably wouldn't have been an issue to have replaced if we had tried, it's been perfect.

Great lid
I recently had a compost bin failure so I was looking for a bin that would be sturdy and that the lid would be convenient. Both things were present in this bin. Bags fit well and the lid is easy to open and close so you don’t have to handle it too much. Would recommend

Works great
great product.. ideally would have liked a metal one but this is durable plastic (I was after the size). btw the little clip that comes with it fits under the handle's fastener to hold the bag.
