Where can I drill a small hole in the handle for a lanyard - - how far does the tang go inside the handle . thank You.

As a seller, we have to tell you drilling holes will void the warranty, and so on, in general though, Morakniv uses a 3/4 tang in its molded-handled knives. :-)

Can this handle some salt water, like for diving?

This knife is stainless steel and could handle normal marine conditions, but is not a knife you would want to take diving. The typical dive knife will have specific blade profile, a sheath with a proper retention clip, and commonly use 304 or 316 marine grade steel. The Morakniv Rope is still a excellent knife but if used in the right environment.

No. In general, knives that float are pretty much a bad idea and usually best avoided (thin blade and bulky handle). :-)

Will this sheath retain the knife if it's worn upside down?

Yes - I taped it to my gear that way working in commercial salmon fishing.
